The Climate Group is an independent, not-for-profit organization working to inspire and catalyze leadership for a Clean Revolution: a low carbon future that is smarter, better and more prosperous. For all.

  • Clean Revolution

    Launched The Clean Revolution Campaign at the Rio+20 Earth Summit, with full support from Rt. Hon. Tony Blair, the UN, the World Bank and many more of the world's most influential leaders.

    We officially launched The Clean Revolution Campaign at Rio+20 - the world's most important summit on the state of the planet.

    Among many proud moments in Rio, we introduced four game-changing reports: Leadership for a Clean Revolution, Consensus and Cooperation for a Clean Revolution: China and global sustainable development, Lighting the Clean Revolution and Clean Revolution Leadership from the World's States and Regions.

    We also announced a new partnership withISEP that will unlock the potential of the ICT sector, and our States and Regions Alliance commited to bold sub-national leadership via our Clean Revolution Statement.

  • Breaking the Climate Deadlock

    Worked with Tony Blair on "Breaking the Climate Deadlock", the international climate change policy initiative.

    Breaking the Climate Deadlock was our joint initiative with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair which aimed to help build support for an ambitious new global climate deal in Copenhagen in December 2009 - and its subsequent implementation - through a suite of expert reports, briefing papers and public engagement activities.

  • Climate Week NYC

    Set up Climate Week NYC, an annual summit with more than 60 high-level meetings, forums and public-facing events on climate change each year in New York City.

    Climate Week NYC aims to mobilize climate action through a week-long agenda packed with diverse public-facing events and high-level meetings. Now in its fourth year, it yet again takes place at the key moment when hundreds of government, business and thought leaders converge on New York City for the United Nations General Assembly meeting, forming the perfect audience for us to showcase how Clean Revolution leadership is already changing the world.

  • LED pilots

    Under our LED program, the LightSavers consortium of cities is engaged in an unprecedented coordinated global trial of LED street-lighting in 12 major cities and across 5 continents.

    We launched a ground-breaking LED lighting pilot project in New York City, followed closley by pilots around the world including Sydney, Australia, Tianjin, China, London, UK, Kolkata, India, Sydney, Australia and Toronto, Canada, where glowing results have proven that the low carbon lighting technology is ready to be brought to scale. In many of our locations, scale-up is already well underway. This was made possible with the sponsorship of HSBC bank

  • SMART 2020

    Published a game-changing report showing how smart technology can deliver 15% less global emissions and US$800 billion in energy savings by 2020.

    SMART 2020: enabling the low carbon economy in the information age, is the world's first comprehensive global study of the ICT sector's growing significance for the world's climate. It shows that while the sector is responsible for 2% of global emissions – set to almost double by 2020 - ICT's unique ability to monitor and maximize energy efficiency could cut CO2 emissions by up to five times this amount.

  • Behavior change

    Partnered with some of the world's biggest brands to help people save 5 million tons of CO2 and US$1 billion in household energy bills.

    Our research revealed a clear opportunity for companies to lead. We found that people want brands (rather than green specialists) to play a bigger role in tackling climate change. We worked with brands and consumers to bolster leadership on climate change through programs such as the Together campaign, Recycle Together and Hong Kong Carbon Reduction Campaign.

  • Voluntary Carbon Standard

    Created the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), now the most popular global standard for voluntary offsetting.

    The Climate Group, the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and the World Economic Forum Global Greenhouse Register developed the Voluntary Carbon Standard. It is designed to be a global benchmark standard for project-based voluntary emission reductions that offers standardization to the voluntary carbon market and creates a credible voluntary emission reduction credit, the VCU.

  • Assembly Bill 32

    Helped push through California's landmark Assembly Bill 32 making it mandatory for businesses to report on and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

    Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the landmark legislation: Assembly Bill 32, the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which calls for a cap on state-wide greenhouse-gas emissions, and a 25% reduction by 2020. California also established emission controls on the largest industrial sectors, leaving the door open for market mechanisms like emissions trading, to help reduce global warming in a way that makes economic sense.

    We release the report Consensus and Cooperation for a Clean Revolution: China and global sustainable development, along with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which suggests that China must collaborate internationally and invest in clean technology to tackle the financial crisis.

  • Lighting the Clean Revolution report

    New report Lighting the Clean Revolution: The rise of LED street lighting and what it means for cities, is launched at Rio+20. It shares the findings of LightSavers, an independent, two-and-a-half-year global pilot of LED lamps in 15 separate trials across 12 cities which reveals that LEDs an generate energy savings as high as 85%.

    The HSBC Climate Partnership, a five-year program between The Climate Group, Earthwatch Institute, HSBC, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and WWF, wins top category at the Business Charity Awards. The Partnership has also been listed as one of the most admired corporate-NGO partnerships by C&E Advisory.

  • Plugged-in Fleets report launched

    Our report Plugged-in Fleets was published in collaboration with Energy Saving Trust and Cenex, and with support from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, TFL and TNT’s Planet Medivision. It states that electric vehicles (EVs) can be commercially viable in business fleets.

  • Chinese LED project selected by the UN at COP17 in Durban

    Along with Philips Lighting we were praised by the UN for our joint solar-driven LED street lighting '1,000 Village' project in China’s Guiyang community at the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban (COP17). The project was selected by the UN as one of ten worldwide Lighthouse Projects of the UN's Momentum for Change.

  • Information Marketplaces report

    We launched a new report,Information Marketplaces: The New Economics of Cities, that states that while cities are using information and communications technology (ICT) to improve their sustainability and efficiency, they are not recognizing or measuring the full value of smart initiatives and are missing the opportunity to turn unused data and infrastructure into new low carbon solutions and services.

  • Clean Revolution introduced at Climate Week NYC 2011

    The Climate Group introduced the Clean Revolution campaign at Climate Week NYC 2011, alongside a full-page call for leadership action in the Financial Times, full support from Mayor Bloomberg, Rt. Hon. Tony Blair, the UN, the World Bank and C40 Cities, and a new website, TheCleanRevolution.org which showcases transformational leadership through constantly updated case studies.

  • Businesses call for 30% emissions reduction target

    An ever-increasing list of top European companies, presently totalling 74, have signed up to a Joint Declaration calling on the European Union to adopt a 30% emissions reduction target by 2020 below 1990 levels, to preserve the European Union's competitiveness, and build a low carbon economy.

    Now in its fifth year of tracking greenhouse gas emissions from energy use in Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, the Greenhouse Indicator Annual Report 2010 was published, revealing that emissions are down for the second year running.

    The HSBC Climate Partnership Review 2010 was released, celebrating the continuing achievements of the five-year collaboration between HSBC, The Climate Group, Earthwatch Institute, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and WWF's pioneering program, which has been working to reduce the impact of climate change on people, forests, freshwater and cities, and to accelerate the adoption of low carbon policies.

  • Leaders' meeting at World Economic Forum in Davos

    Along with the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change, we hosteda meeting for international leaders from the finance and energy sectors in Davos, during this year's World Economic Forum Annual Meeting. The second Climate Principles Progress Review, which was produced by PricewaterhouseCoopers for The Climate Group, was released during this high-profile event.

  • Climate Leaders Summit at COP16 in Cancun

    We host the Climate Leaders Summit 2010 in Cancun, Mexico, on the sidelines of the COP16 UN climate talks.     A report was launched by the UK-India Business Leaders Climate Group, a diverse group of influential CEOs and senior business leaders from the UK and India. The Climate Group, acting as secretariat to the Group, oversaw the launch of a new 'Charter of Principles' to Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change, Gregory Barker, recommending practical ways India and the UK can together unlock a new era of green growth and economic collaboration.

At the Opening Ceremony, we convene world leaders from business and government - including the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, top climate negotiators from the US, China, and India, as well as actor, Hugh Jackman - to call on world leaders for an ambitious and successful deal in Copenhagen.
