    We organize Climate Week NYC, the annual summit of high-level government and business leaders focused on driving the transition to a low carbon economy. We also mobilized world leaders in support of California’s trailblazing AB32 law in 2006, the first major government legislation to cut carbon emissions.     SMART 2020: enabling the low carbon economy in the information age, is the ground-breaking study which showed how ICT could reduce global CO2 emissions by 15% and save businesses US$900 billion.     Launched by The Climate Group, the Voluntary Carbon Standard is now the world’s most popular standard for voluntary emissions offsetting. It has since changed its name to the Verified Carbon Standard.

  • States and Regions Alliance

    Our global network of sub-national governments is driving investment in renewable energy and electric fleet vehicles around the world. In 2005, we teamed up with the states of Québec and Manitoba to hold the first Climate Leaders Summit, resulting in the Montréal Declaration of Federated States and Regions, which commits to setting targets and implementing climate action and was signed by over 50 sub-national governments from around the world. We also launched the C40 Cities network.

  • Climate Week NYC 2014: Speakers include Secretary John Kerry, Ban Ki-moon and CEOs from Apple, IKEA, ahead of UN Climate Summit

    In a sign of growing support for climate action, US Secretary of State John Kerry, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, and Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC Christiana Figueres today laid out their visions for a vibrant, low carbon economy on the successful Opening Day of Climate Week NYC 2014.

    They were joined by Peter Agnefjäll, CEO, IKEA, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, and Sir Richard Branson, Founder of the Virgin Group, and executives from leading companies – some of them ‘new voices’ in the climate debate – including BT, HP, Lockheed Martin, Swiss Re and Unilever.

    Boasting almost 150 affiliate events, Climate Week NYC 2014 generated a record amount of media coverage with more than 1,300 news stories reaching an estimated 1 billion people across 40 countries. On social media too, we hit more than 150 million impressions on Twitter – a 38-fold increase on last year.

    We Mean Business is a powerful coalition of world-leading business and climate organizations, which joined forces  for the first time  to create a unified business voice in support of decisive action to tackle climate change and transition to a low carbon future.

    Founding partners are BSR, the B Team, CDP, Ceres, The Climate Group, the Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group (CLG) and WBCSD: the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, which together represent thousands of top companies and investors.

  • Results of our LED lighting pilots in India so good local government adopt scale-up

    The results of a LED street lighting pilot in the city of Kolkata in India have been collected, revealing such compelling energy savings that the local government has decided to make the switch to low carbon lighting across the city. 

    India's Kolktata Municipal Corporation plans to replace 300,000 existing street lights in its jurisdiction with LED street lights, based on the findings of our pilot project.

    The alliance was launched at the Guiyang Eco Forum Global Annual Conference, at the Gui’an New Area and The Climate Group joint event, ‘Redefine Regional Green Growth Leadership’.

    A ‘Net Positive’ approach is key for long-term business success in the face of growing social and environmental pressures, finds an influential new report launched by Forum for the FutureThe Climate Group and WWF-UK, which includes Principles developed by BT, Capgemini, Coca-Cola Enterprises, The Crown Estate, IKEA Group, Kingfisher and SKF.

    The report – Net Positive: A new way of doing business – captures, for the first time, the principles of what it means to take a Net Positive approach and provides a route map to help businesses engage with the concept. It calls for the ambition of business to change from ‘doing less harm’ to becoming ‘Net Positive’ to have a positive impact on the world.

Hosted under the high patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco and co-organized in partnership with his Foundation, the special event was held at the Salle Empire at the Hôtel de Paris in the heart of Monte Carlo.

  • LED Consultation process launched

    In February we launched a new consultation process for 2014 to focus on accelerating the adoption of LED street lighting around the globe, supported by our Lead Partner Philips Lighting.

    Lighting represents around 19% of global electricity consumption. And the potential savings that can be realized from large-scale replacement of aging street lighting with more energy efficient LED solutions can range from 50-70%, with up to 80% achievable with smart controls.

  • Construction waste recycling in China: Mandarin report released

    At the fourth Low Carbon Forum in Guangzhou, China, The Climate Group launched a report, Construction and Demolishing Waste Recycling in China, which analyzes low carbon processes for recycling waste from building construction.

  • LED street lighting collaboration launched with Philips at Davos

    First announced in July 2013, The Climate Group, YouChange Foundation and China Philanthropist Magazine launched our low carbon leadership training program. Former UK Prime Minister Rt Hon Tony Blair and long-time supporter of The Climate Group spoke at the event in Beijing. Youth Lead You Change provide innovative young people with the professional training they need to become future leaders of China's sustainable economy. Long-term it aims to become a global training program.

  • China Climate Finance Research Project

    The Climate Group launched the China Climate Finance Research Project in Beijing. The joint initiative of The Climate Group, China's National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation and China Clean Development Mechanism Fund links financial institutions, governments and businesses to address China’s climate finance limitations and develop innovative new mechanisms and policy frameworks to address them.

    The Climate Group, in collaboration with the World Bank Institute and the Dutch Postcode Lottery, launched an off-grid energy competition that seeks innovative, micro-grid based energy solutions to scale up electricity access in the states of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra in India.   • Climate Week NYC 2013 - the summit's fifth anniversary and our biggest one yet

    From September 23-30, 2013, The Climate Group hosted Climate Week NYC 2013, our fifth anniversary of the summit. With the support of Swiss Re, the summit’s founding sponsor, HP and Solar City, the Lead Sponsors, Official Media Partner The Weather Company, and supporters New York City, NASDAQ, the National Grid, the UN Foundation, and the UN Environment Programme, the summit mobilized a group of powerful leaders to demand climate action and low carbon growth. 

    Beyond our high-level Opening Ceremony, highlights of the week included our hosting of IPCC climate scientists in a live briefing from Stockholm, hours after they had released the IPCC AR5 report which says humans are to blame for climate change. We also held an event where experts from Facebook, IKEA and Nike said business big and small should embrace low carbon innovation, and released a new briefing and infographics that explore how America can meet its long term emission goals.

  • Crowd-sourcing contest: EarthHack

    Powered by the Marblar platform and with the support of IKEA and Philips, EarthHack is a crowd-sourcing contest that asked competitors to reimagine existing technology for a more sustainable home today, to help save 1 million tons of CO2 a year by 2020. We held our first Google+ Hangout to discuss the contest. The winner was announced at Climate Week NYC 2013 as Radfan.

    At Climate Week NYC 2012, we launched the American Clean Revolution report along with an accompanying infographic and online app. Speakers including Tony Blair, Twitter co-founder Evan Williams and senior representatives from national agricultural, religious and medical institutions, who gathered to announce their support for an American clean revolution just weeks ahead of election day. Other summit highlights include a heated discussion between the EU, UN and World Bank ahead of COP18, a panel lead by Jeffrey Sachs, and an announcement from Living Labs on its commitment to implementing high impact urban technologies in 30 cities.

  • Chinese LED project selected by the UN at COP17 in Durban

    Along with Philips Lighting we were praised by the UN for our joint solar-driven LED street lighting '1,000 Village' project in China’s Guiyang community at the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban (COP17). The project was selected by the UN as one of ten worldwide Lighthouse Projects of the UN's Momentum for Change.

    We launched a new report, Information Marketplaces: The New Economics of Cities, that states that while cities are using information and communications technology (ICT) to improve their sustainability and efficiency, they are not recognizing or measuring the full value of smart initiatives and are missing the opportunity to turn unused data and infrastructure into new low carbon solutions and services.

    An ever-increasing list of top European companies, presently totalling 74, have signed up to a Joint Declaration calling on the European Union to adopt a 30% emissions reduction target by 2020 below 1990 levels, to preserve the European Union's competitiveness, and build a low carbon economy.

    The Climate Group China organized two panel discussions at the Carbon Treasure Program Phase event, where the Carbon Strategy and Management Guidelines for Chinese Businesses was launched, which includes one general and three sector guidelines, to help drive a Clean Revolution in China.

    Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the landmark legislation: Assembly Bill 32, the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which calls for a cap on state-wide greenhouse-gas emissions, and a 25% reduction by 2020. California also established emission controls on the largest industrial sectors, leaving the door open for market mechanisms like emissions trading, to help reduce global warming in a way that makes economic sense.
