Climate Change Strategy Details
To honor their voluntary 2007 commitment to become carbon neutral, Google has:
- calculated their carbon footprint
- reduced their energy usage by building and designing efficient data centers and using on-site renewable energy
- purchased high-quality offsets
- worked with a third party to certify their calculations and validate their offset portfolio.
Google is utilizing its unique engineering expertise and global reach to advance research and provide products that reduce emissions, for example:
- their plug-in hybrid vehicle demonstration program (RechargeIT)
- their research program on producing utility scale renewable energy cheaper than coal (RE<C)
- their Google PowerMeter energy information software tool
- and by encouraging users to use GoogleEarth and other products to discuss and visualize climate change and its effects.
Google has also demonstrated a proactive approach to reducing their own emissions, including:
- progressive employee commute and travel policies
- energy audits and retrofits in their corporate facilities
- a large solar PV installation at their headquarters
- cutting-edge data-center efficiency
- and participation in the Climate Savers Computing Initiative
