Overview

HP's is implementing a multi-pronged climate change strategy, with the following four main focus areas:

  • Reducing the footprint of HP-owned operations: HP has set a goal to reduce GHG emissions from its own operations by 20% below 2005 levels by 2013, on an absolute basis.
  • Reducing the impact of HP's products and services, including GHG emissions associated with the energy consumed by HP products and services while in operation, as well as emissions embedded in their manufacturing and distribution: HP has set a goal to reduce the energy use by its products by 40% by 2011 below 2005. In 2008 HP reported emissions data associated with its largest suppliers, representing more than 80 percent of the companys costs for the materials, manufacturing and assembly of its products worldwide, and in 2009 will request those suppliers reporting GHG emissions to establish multi-year goals for renewable energy use and reduction of GHG emissions.
  • Developing products and services that reduce the footprint of the entire economy beyond I.T. itself: HP is developing solutions that leverage I.T. to increase energy efficiency in the economy, and offers video collaboration solutions that reduce the need for business travel, advanced metering solutions that enable smart grid applications, and digital commercial print solutions that enable print-on-demand of newspapers, magazines and books, reducing the paper waste and associated GHG emissions from printing, stocking and distributing large quantities of unsold printed material.
  • Advocating for effective public policy to enable the transformation of the economy to low-carbon, by fully leveraging the potential of innovation and technology.
