Climate Change Strategy Details

Munich Re’s head office is carbon-neutral and the entire international organisation will be carbon neutral by 2012. Carbon emissions will be reduced by 10% per employee by 2012 (compared with 2006).

Various measures have already been launched to reach these targets. For example, energy efficient IT projects, renewable energy investments in photovoltaic plants.

The Corporate Climate Centre founded in 2007 coordinates the activites related to the strategic topic of climate change and reports to the Reinsurance CEO.

More Information

Munich Re is part of Munich Re Group.  Munich Re provides solutions to reinsure risks worldwide, covering losses arising from natural catastrophes, major construction projects, third-party liability cases, personal injuries and countless other hazards.

Their business requires consideration of all potential future risks and climate change is at the heart of their business decision making and advice to clients.

They regularly produce research publications to help their stakeholders understand the risks and opportunities posed by climate change. The basis of all activities is in-house expertise about climate change impacts in the physical sphere and on socio-economic sectors worldwide at present and as projected for coming decades.

Research cooperations, e.g. with the London School of Economics (Sir Nicholas Stern), will further deepen the company’s knowledge on sound responses to climate change impacts.

They have a goal to be a carbon neutral organization by 2012 and to reduce carbon emissions by 10% per employee by 2012 (compared with 2006).  In July 2009 they launched a visionary initiative with eleven other companies to support carbon free power -. The objective of this initiative is to analyse and develop the technical, economic, political, social and ecological framework for carbon-free power generation in the deserts of North Africa.

Munich Re has also adopted the Climate Principles and is working with The Climate Group and other leading financial institutions to implement the commitments outlined in the principles. Read the Climate Principles case study about Munich Re's involvement, as both investor and insurer, in the Desertec Industrial Initiative.
