Scotland has set ambitious 2020 targets, as well as 2030 and 2050 targets, in newly enacted Climate Change Legislation. Scotland is an active member of The Climate Group's States and Regions program.
Targets/Goals
- The Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 sets out greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of 42% by 2020 and 80% by 2050 from 1990 levels, with the possibility to enforce shorter term targets if necessary. The Act also put in place a framework for progress reporting, assigned duties to public bodies, and created provision for forestry, energy efficiency, waste reduction and adaptation programs. Finally, it outlined the responsibilities for public engagement and carbon assessment.
- Their top initiatives to deliver these include achieving a renewable portfolio standard of 50% and renewable electricity target of 100% by 2020, zero carbon buildings by 2030 and a 25% increase in forested land by 2050.
