Australia
View Program NewsThe Climate Group opened its Australia office in 2005. Since then, we've been working with leading businesses and both state and federal governments to build a powerful and progressive coalition on climate change.
We continue to forge partnerships at the highest levels. We work closely with Australian state governments, developing new policies and leadership that will fast-track the low-carbon economy, bringing long-term benefits to Australian businesses and the community.
Programs and Partnerships
In addition to our global work, our Australia team is focused on the following regional initiatives:
Bringing business and government together. We hosted a business roundtable with Victorian Minister for Industry and Trade, Jacinta Allan; we convened a meeting of all the Australian Premiers and business leaders, focusing on new paths to smarter low carbon communities; we brought Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan and leading businesses together to explore new ideas in innovative low-carbon finance; we convened the inaugural Queensland Climate Summit with over 100 business leaders, the Premier and many of her key ministers.
Accelerating the uptake of key technologies. We are working to install LED pilot trials in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne as part of our global LightSavers initiative. We are working with Victoria and South Australia to speed up the deployment of Electric Vehicles. And we are working with all state governments as well as a range of companies to identify and develop new smart, low carbon precincts in Australia.
Greenhouse Indicator. In what we believe to be a world first, we developed this real-time tool to track and report on weekly greenhouse gas emission from energy use for select Australian States. It provides up to date, in-depth information and analysis on emissions levels. We then communicate this information out to key players in industry as well as the general public. The Greenhouse Indicator is now active for New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria.
Advocating progressive Australian policy. Through research and high-level engagement, we work to inform the development of key government policies. We played a key role in the federal policy to support the rollout of solar photovoltaic panels. We are also working to ensure that national policies enable both businesses and individuals to take additional action on climate change.
