Targets and Goals
- The Ile-de-France Region master plan (SDRIF) has the objective of a 75% greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction by the year 2030. Ile-de France is also currently elaborating a regional climate plan. To involve all the stakeholders there will be a green book to establish a shared climate profile of the territory followed by a white book to work out the solutions that Ile-de-France needs to tackle climate disruption.
Top Actions
Energy Efficiency
- In 2006, the regional council adopted a plan to control energy consumption and develop renewable energy. The plan encourages energy savings in social housing and service sector buildings.
Clean Energy
- At the moment, alternative energy covers less than 10% of Île-de-France's needs. The aim of the energy plan 2006-2010 is to install 80,000 m² of new solar panels in social housing and, 40,000 m² on public buildings, and so avoid 30,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
- Extend heating networks and connect 30,000 new homes to these networks by 2010.
- Burn 300,000 tonnes of wood a year in collective boilers which represent 100,000 dwellings.
- Extend the heat produced by burning household waste to connect 100,000 more dwellings by 2010 to reduce CO2 emissions by 36,000 tonnes per year.
- Île-de-France is the leading region in France for the use of geothermal power with 80% of the national production, representing 160,000 dwellings. The objective is to add an additional 30,000 dwellings by 2010.
- The regional council is now offering grants to private individuals to help achieve some of these targets.
Clean Transport
- Île-de-France is supporting the upcoming deployment of 4000 electric cars and more than 1400 charge points throughout Paris and its surrounding cities, modelled on the city’s popular bike rental scheme.
- The regional council shares a regional charter with its partners for non-polluting forms of transport. It signs green network contracts with communes to develop cycle routes and cycle parks, create a balance in towns between motorized transport and non-polluting forms of transport and create pedestrian streets and traffic-calming areas in quiet districts.
Sustainable Land Use
- Île-de-France is taking action to preserve its biological treasures and its countryside, and to create and maintain nature parks. The regional council purchases and maintains natural areas. In 2006, it began work to set up 30 nature reserves.
- The regional council also intends to maintain high-quality agriculture. It takes action on the promotion of local products.
Waste Management
- The regional council will approve by the end of 2009 a Regional Plan to reduce household and similar waste. Its main aim is to cut down the quantity and toxicity of waste and reduce its impact on the environment. To optimize the efficiency of treatment processes is also a priority.
- Dangerous waste and potentially infectious hospital waste are also covered by specific management plans.
