Tony Blair on the Report’s Objectives
“...The challenge is not one of will. It is how to get a deal that sets us clearly on a path to a low carbon future; that is fair; and that is do-able. That is radical and realistic. In this report, we describe the elements that could go into such a deal and the thinking behind them...” Read the report

Background on the “Breaking the Climate Deadlock” Initiative

OBJECTIVES
The Breaking the Climate Deadlock initiative was launched in Chiba, Japan, on 20th March 2008. This project aims to build decisive political support among the key players - US, EU, China, India, Japan and Russia - for a framework international agreement on climate change and the strategies for its subsequent implementation that will result in greenhouse gas emissions reductions consistent with those advocated by the scientific consensus.
TWO COMPLEMENTARY STRATEGIES
BRING NEW CLARITY TO THE OPTIONS FOR A DEAL
A series of briefings will identify:
> the building blocks of an international framework acceptable to the major emitting countries,
> implementation strategies that will generate significant emissions reductions in major emitting sectors
> detailed economic analysis demonstrating the economic impacts and the investment needs of the framework and strategies
BROKER AGREEMENT
Mr. Blair and The °Climate Group will lead a multi-year engagement to secure the support of exceptional political, business and NGO leaders, key policy-makers and opinion formers.
THE PARTNERSHIP
The Breaking the Climate Deadlock project is spearheaded by Tony Blair, working closely with The °Climate Group’s international team led by Policy Director Mark Kenber and CEO Dr. Steve Howard.
They will engage with a group of leading experts on climate change issues to provide political, economic, technical and other input to the initiative. The project is also looking to partner with other organisations that share its goals and has already consulted with the UNFCCC, leaders of the G8+5 countries and the Danish government.
