Climate Week NY˚C - Crossing the Commercialization Valley of Death: Financing Clean Energy Technologies

Clean energy technologies have made substantial progress over the past decade, as they have been positioned to address such issues as climate change, energy diversification and, for many nations, energy independence. Leading-edge technologies such as concentrated solar power (CSP), electric vehicles (EVs), and smart grids are proliferating more rapidly than ever before. However, critical financing gaps remain before these technologies can be adopted in a truly widespread and meaningful way.

While venture capital firms or corporate research & development departments will support small-scale pilot projects, the initial commercialization phases are generally beyond these budgets, creating an often-insurmountable “valley of death” before larger institutions are prepared to step in and finance a commercially viable project. This intermediate financing phase has quickly emerged as a central theme for policymakers, project developers, and now the financial community.
