Dr Joyce F. Brown

Dr. Joyce F. Brown is president of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), a specialized college of art and design, business and technology of the State University of New York (SUNY). Appointed in 1998, she is the college’s sixth president.

Dr. Brown, a highly regarded educator and academic administrator, has had over 35 years experience in public higher education. She held a number of senior administrative posts at the City University of New York (CUNY) before arriving at FIT, including acting president of Bernard Baruch College and vice chancellor of the university. Prior to her appointment at FIT, she was professor of clinical psychology at the Graduate School and University Center of CUNY, where she is currently professor emerita. Dr. Brown has also served as a New York City deputy mayor for public and community affairs.

Under Dr. Brown’s leadership, FIT has grown strategically, building faculty ranks and expanding the curriculum---while focusing on academic and creative excellence, innovation and global outreach.

Dr. Brown’s participation in the 2009 Clinton Global Initiative University formalized a long-standing institutional commitment to sustainability which resulted in the identification and coordination of college-wide practices affecting the physical plant, the curriculum and public programs. In 2013, FIT placed first among colleges and universities in Mayor Bloomberg’s 10-year carbon challenge by reducing FIT’s carbon footprint by over 40 percent in three years. Energy-efficient renovations are undertaken routinely and include, to date, the installation of three green roofs.

FIT integrates sustainability issues throughout its curriculum. In 2010, it launched a pioneering master’s degree program in Sustainable Interior Environments and recently introduced a minor in Sustainability and Ethics. Dr. Brown established a college-wide Sustainability Council which promotes dialogue, campus-wide activities and manages a grant program for related projects. FIT also holds an annual public conference that attracts business leaders, students, scholars and government officials.
