CB Richard Ellis achieves carbon neutrality
- 08 July 2011
NEW YORK: The Climate Group member, CB Richard Ellis, has achieved carbon neutrality, making it the first global real estate services company to achieve this goal.
This announcement is the result of an ambitious goal that CB Richard Ellis included in its 2007 Environmental Stewardship Policy.
The target was met through carbon mitigation programs including LEED certified offices and sustainable operation standards, and by purchasing carbon offsets from carbon reduction projects around the world.
The company’s carbon footprint was measured using the World Resources Institute’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Using this methodology, global carbon emissions derived from sources either controlled or owned by CB Richard Ellis were recorded.
Matt Ellis, Director, CB Richard Ellis, joined The Climate Group’s 4th Annual North American Members Meeting in May 2011, and explained that: “Laying out a strategy to take CBRE carbon neutral has been an incredible learning process and one of the company’s proudest achievements. It’s opened up a company-wide dialogue around sustainability, and left us better equipped to engage our clients on their own carbon reduction strategies.”
Dasha Rettew, Head of Corporate Engagement North America, The Climate Group, said: “While every company’s carbon reduction goal will be different, the process established to meet the goal creates a dialogue that inspires creativity and employee awareness and, in CBRE's case, has enhanced its service offering while lowering its operating costs. CBRE’s accomplishment of carbon neutrality is an example of inspired leadership that is driving a cleaner, more prosperous future.”
Brett White, CEO, CB Richard Ellis, says: “As the world’s largest third-party manager of commercial property, with a 2.9 billion square foot global portfolio, we can have an outsized impact on the environment by helping our clients lower energy consumption, improve efficiency and reduce emissions. One of the best ways we can demonstrate our expertise is to lead by example in our own operations.”
