Harry Verhaar, Philips, to talk about the LED revolution live on Twitter

LONDON: On May 10, 2012, Harry Verhaar, Senior Director Energy & Climate Change, Philips, will be live on Twitter to answer your questions on the LED Revolution, following the series launch on May 1.

And your questions couldn't come at a more critical moment in time.

The scale-up of LED (light-emitting diode) technology is key to the Clean Revolution we so urgently need. Because in order to achieve sustainable prosperity for our planet's rapidly growing population, we need a revolution in the way we produce and consume energy. One of the most effective ways we will do this is by making lighting more energy efficient.

Flipping the switch to low carbon LEDs will lower global emissions. Currently lighting accounts for nearly 6% of global CO2 greenhouse gas emissions, or 1,900 million tons of CO2 per year, which is the equivalent of CO2 emissions from 70% of the world’s passenger vehicles. We can make a considerable dent in carbon emissions if we upscale LED lighting.

Philips is a market leader in energy efficient lighting solutions, and Harry Verhaar, Senior Director Energy & Climate Change, Philips Lighting, is ready to answer your questions and share his ideas on exactly how - and why - we can make an LED Revolution happen. Heading up the global Energy Efficiency program (also called 'Green Switch') at Philips, Harry has helped phase out old lighting technologies for street-lighting, industry lighting and residential lighting across the world, generating global support from governments and organizations including Australia, South Africa, the European Commission and the International Energy Agency.

The live Twitter session with Harry will take place from 3-4pm GMT on Thursday May 10, 2012, as part of our Twitter Q&A series which is running in May and June, and aims to build momentum on topics that will be the focus at Rio+20 Earth Summit.

To take part, all you need to do is log-in to Twitter and head to @ClimateGroup at 3pm GMT on May 10. We will introduce the topic and Harry will share his views. You will then be invited to direct your questions to him – so start planning and tweeting your questions now. Just be sure to include the hashtag #CleanRevolution, to make sure he doesn't miss your question.
