Knoxville government and national industry back The Climate Group program
- 17 October 2011
NEW YORK: The government and industry leaders who have supported the successful The Climate Group program Recycle Together were applauded in Knoxville, Tennessee last week by national industry body American Beverage Association (ABA).
Mayor Daniel Brown, Governor Bill Haslam, Susan Neely, ABA and Mike Edwards, Knoxville Chamber Partnership assembled in Knoxville to celebrate the city’s new curbside recycling program, which kicked-off earlier in October.
The ABA praised the Mayor and Governor for their lengthy support of the business-forward sustainable initiative, from research and planning stages to education and implementation.
Susan Neely, President and CEO, American Beverage Association said: “We commend Knoxville for launching a sustainable program which will help make recycling a reality for 20,000 homes throughout the city. Through our work with The Climate Group, our industry is proud to support comprehensive recycling programs that address all recyclables, such as Knoxville’s Do Your Part, With the Cart.”
Recognition of the compelling program follows on from Knoxville being named a Model City by The Climate Group as part of our Recycle Together initiative, of which is currently just 900 households shy of its target to sign up 20,000.
Former Knoxville Mayor, Governor Bill Haslam said: “It is great to see household curbside recycling growing in Tennessee. Diverting natural resources out of the waste stream and into growing markets for recycled materials saves energy, reduces carbon dioxide emissions and creates jobs for Tennesseans.”
Kate Krebs, Director of Sustainable Resources, The Climate Group says: “Knoxville was a terrific partner, and will add to their portfolio of smart municipal services a state of the art recycling program, which aligns with the Recycle Together goal of effective, efficient and resource saving collection systems. As a Model City, Knoxville is a shining example to cities across the country that recycling is an important element of a sustainable city.”
Recycle Together aims to reinvigorate recycling as one way to reduce climate change and protect the environment, and is a partnership between The Climate Group and The American Beverage Association, The Coca-Cola Company, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, Nestle Waters NA and Pepsi-Cola North America.
