Better Place announces first Members of new EV network in Australia's capital

MELBOURNE: Better Place, a member of The Climate Group, has announced its first exclusive group of Foundation Members, who will work together to support Better Place’s new electric car charge network in Canberra, Australia's capital city.

The 12 leading organizations that make up the Canberra Charge Network Foundation Members are: the ACT Government, the ACT Electric Vehicle Council, ActewAGL, Canberra Airport, Capital Hotel Group, CIC Australia, Crowne Plaza, Hindmarsh, Lend Lease, the National Convention Centre, Rock Development Group, and TransACT.

The Members will install public charge spots at prime locations around Canberra, which will encourage the large-scale uptake of EVs in the city.

Evan Thornley, CEO, Better Place Australia states: “This collaboration between Better Place, the ACT Government, and a range of Canberra’s leading businesses is a great example of the way the public and private sectors can work together for a common goal. Today’s announcement is the next step in the installation of Better Place’s full charge network in the region. It is the next step towards zero emissions driving in our nation’s capital, and the introduction of mainstream electric cars that will be affordable and convenient for Canberra drivers,”

Recently Better Place agreed its first power purchase with ActewAGL to buy 100% renewable energy for Canberra’s electric car charge network.

Better Place’s new EV network is in line with the ACT Government’s goal of achieving its emissions reduction target of 40% by 2020.

Katy Gallagher, Chief Minister, ACT said: “Today’s announcement demonstrates that positive change can be achieved through the cooperation and partnership of business and citizens. I am pleased that Canberra is the first city in which Better Place will roll out its electric car charge network and I congratulate those with the vision to make it happen,”

Caroline Bayliss, Australia Director, The Climate Group, welcomes Better Place’s Canberra EV network. She said: “The momentum is really building behind electric vehicles in Australia. As well as the huge environmental benefits that EVs coupled with renewables bring, this announcement shows that companies from a range of sectors already see real value in this area. The right government support will accelerate the development of the Australian EV market, creating jobs and expertise in what will be a hugely profitable global industry.”
