NEW YORK: In Manhattan last night, we honored Christiana Figueres, Mayor Bloomberg and The Dutch Postcode Lottery with The Climate Group Leadership Awards, for their inspiring commitment to climate change action.

To a crowd of New York’s business, government and civic society leaders, following the Opening Ceremony of Climate Week NYC 2013, at the fifth anniversary cocktail reception last night Mark Kenber, CEO, The Climate Group, applauded the resounding success of the summit's fifth anniversary, and said: “If we get the right leaders to take bold, transformative action on climate, we can succeed. And we’re doing it. We’re recruiting, engaging and mobilizing leaders across the political spectrum, through diverse sectors, and from around the world.

“I believe that we will look back at this time in our history–2013–as the turning point in this movement. Many of those leaders are here tonight. And it is my privilege to honor them with The Climate Group Leadership Award.”

Honorees of the awards were:

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg for creating a greener, more resilient New York City. His groundbreaking PlanNYC initiative was recognized for becoming a blueprint for New York’s City’s long term sustainability, as well as his unprecedented response to Hurricane Sandy. The award was accepted by Deputy Mayor, Cas Holloway.

The Dutch Postcode Lottery for creating a fairer, greener world. In 2010, the Lottery divided 270 million euros among its beneficiaries in the fields of poverty alleviation, human rights, nature and environment. The award was accepted by Marieke van Schaik, who co-initiated and organized the first Postcode Lottery Green Challenge, one of the largest annual worldwide competitions for sustainable entrepreneurs who can instigate change. Marieke van Schaik is also a member of the Advisory Council of The Elders and devoted partner of The Climate Group.

Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, for boldly promoting climate action worldwide. Christiana Figueres saved the UNFCCC after Copenhagen, was an architect of the Clean Development Mechanism, and is a fearless and fearsome climate negotiator for Costa Rica. She was also a member of the Verified Carbon Standard board and is a strong believer in the Clean Revolution and its purpose.

The Climate Group will continue to work with leaders like these across the world, to mobilize climate action and drive a clean revolution. For all.
