Christiana Figueres to answer your questions on how business can make climate talks a success at #CWNYC
- 27 August 2014
LONDON: UN climate chief Christiana Figueres will join The Climate Group for a live Twitter Q&A on how businesses can play their part in making next month's UN Climate Summit and Climate Week NYC a success ahead of global talks in Lima and Paris. You can take part by using #CWNYC at 3pm London time/4pm Berlin time, September 8.
Climate Week NYC, convened by The Climate Group, is a key international platform for governments, businesses and civil society to collaborate on low carbon leadership, through a week filled with events, activities and high-profile meetings.
This year, taking place from September 22-28, Climate Week NYC is also the collaborative space for all related events in support of the UN Climate Summit, convened by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday September 23. Together the two summits have the potential to catapult climate change back to the top of the world agenda, mobilizing leaders to act now.
But how can businesses help propel this movement? What can companies do to get involved in upcoming events or contribute to curbing climate change? How can corporate brands lead a fast-changing, low carbon economy yet do their bit to ensure progress toward a global climate deal?
Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will join us live on Twitter to answer your questions around this topic, on September 8.
Involved in climate change negotiations since 1995, last year Christiana Figueres also launched international competition, Momentum for Change, which aims to re-energize debate on climate by promoting the actions of cities, businesses, communities and governments who are actively working toward a low carbon future, with the most impressive projects honored as 2014 Lighthouse Activities. It is hoped these winning solutions will be adapted across different sectors.
"Momentum to tackle climate change is building in every corner of the globe. The Secretary-General's Summit and Climate Week NYC are both unique opportunities to further build on this momentum and to give a significant boost to the crucial upcoming UN climate change negotiations in Lima and to the universal climate agreement that will agreed in Paris in 2015", explains Christiana Figueres.
"Governments, cities and the business community will be making bold announcements that can help accelerate the speed and scope of climate action. And civil society groups, from the religious to health communities, have a major role to play in providing the necessary political space for governments to lead the way to full climate neutrality in the second half of the century."
The Executive Secretary adds: "I'm greatly looking forward to the Twitter chat, and discussing how the business community and all other key stakeholders can engage."
You can join Christiana Figueres on Twitter to put forward your questions on how businesses can accelerate this momentum on September 8 at 3pm London time/4pm Berlin time using #CWNYC.
