IKEA now gets more than a quarter of its electricity from renewables

LONDON: Retail giant IKEA has made progress against its sustainability strategy for the first time, thanks to record clean energy installed and millions of green products sold in 2013.
IKEA Group released its People & Planet Positive Sustainability Report for 2013 this week, revealing new progress against its strategy to generate 70% of its energy from renewables by 2017 and produce more renewable energy than it consumes by 2020.
Among the highlights, the report shows that in 2013 IKEA:
- installed 550,000 solar panels
- committed to own 137 wind turbines
- sold 22.4 million LED products, including 12.3 million LED bulbs.
Peter Agnefjäll, President and CEO, IKEA Group, said: “Everyone, including IKEA, has a part to play in tackling the expected shortages of resources and the impacts of climate change while providing people with a good quality of life. With our vision of creating “a better everyday life for the many people,” I am convinced there is no other way of doing business than in a sustainable way.”
Steve Howard, Chief Sustainability Officer, IKEA Group, said: “One year on from the launch of our People & Planet Positive strategy, we are making good progress – more than doubling the amount of cotton we buy from more sustainable sources, investing in renewable energy, and enabling millions of people to live more sustainably at home. The 22 million LED products we sold during the year show that more sustainable products have great appeal when customers can understand the savings they can make from day one.”
IKEA published its ambitious sustainability strategy People & Planet Positive last year, which is designed to be an integrated part of its long-term growth and delivery up to 2020.
While the retailer has since opened wind farms around Europe including Poland and Sweden as part of the global strategy, late last year IKEA chose the UK to both launch the sale of home solar systems in its stores as well as install electric vehicle charge points in all of its UK stores.
