New York City Joins The Climate Group

Date
15 May 2007

The Mayor of New York City, Michael R. Bloomberg, speaking at the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit today, announced that New York City has become a member of The Climate Group.

The Climate Group will work to help support the Mayor's recently unveiled sustainability initiative - known as PlaNYC - which aims to reduce the City's global warming emissions by 30%.

"We can no longer just sit back and hope that national governments around the world will take the lead in fighting climate change. Cities produce 80% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions and therefore can make a real difference in this fight. Our PlaNYC agenda will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New York by 30%," said Mayor Bloomberg. "New York City is the first city in the United States to join The °Climate Group and we're proud to stand with London as the only two cities in the world to have become members. I look forward to more cities here and abroad joining."

Dr. Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group, said: "We are thrilled that New York City is joining our leadership coalition and are eager to help Mayor Bloomberg accomplish his goal of making New York City the greenest city in the United States."

The Mayor's announcement comes just three weeks after the launch of PlaNYC - a raft of ambitious, environmentally sensitive measures that he said would make New York City the first environmentally sustainable 21st-century city.

"The Mayor's PlaNYC is a very holistic and bold climate action strategy," continues Howard. "It shows the positive economic and social opportunities available to a city from embracing the challenge presented from climate change. The °Climate Group looks forward to continuing to work with New York City to assist in the delivery of this plan."

"As a media and financial capital, when New York City acts, the world notices," said Chris Walker, The Climate Group's US Director. "Financiers and media together have the ability to convince the world that climate change is the most serious issue facing humanity and to shift the world's focus to low carbon energy sources. The °Climate Group is ready to help New York City take courageous, innovative climate action."
