The Climate Group announces new interactive event - "Innovation Game Changers: Off-grid electrification"

NEW YORK: The Climate Group is pleased to host a new interactive, global event: Innovation Game Changers: Off-grid electrification, on June 4 2014. Visit this page and confirm your attendance to add it to your calendar.

Solar experts: Piyush Jaju, Co-Founder and CEO, ONergy, Ryan Levinson, Founder and CEO, SunFunder and Debajit Palit, Associate Director, TERI, will be sharing their thoughts on off-grid innovation with The Climate Group North America’s Executive Director, Amy Davidson, during the live, web-streamed discussion.

The conversation, powered by Google Hangout, will examine how entrepreneurs in emerging economies are facilitating access to energy through innovative business models. Similarly, the panelists will highlight examples of decentralized solar projects which have improved quality of life for rural communities while also cutting carbon emissions significantly.

The conversation will feature an update on The Climate Group’s Bjli Clean Energy for All program, which is principally funded by the Dutch Postcode Lottery, and now operational in the Indian states of Maharashtra, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

New financing mechanisms such as crowd funding will be addressed and an emphasis will be placed on how efforts can be scaled up to ensure the maximum number of people can connect to sustainable and affordable power.

Panelist Debajit Palit has a wealth of experience in this area and currently leads the ‘Lighting for All’ Working Group under the Energy for All Partnership of the Asian Development Bank, while Piyush Jaju co-founded leading solar energy solution company ONergy. Ryan Levinson is widely known for his commitment to driving solar investment forward. Prior to founding SunFunder, he was VP of Environmental Finance at Wells Fargo and was responsible for $500 million of investments in more than 150 solar projects.

Amy Davidson, Executive Director, The Climate Group North America, commented: “Off-grid electrification is one of the key areas of opportunity of the low carbon economy and one which is critically important for human well-being.  Access to clean, reliable energy is paramount and it is absolutely unacceptable that today 1.5 billion people worldwide do not have access to electric light after nightfall.”

“To date, we have seen a rapid expansion of off-grid electrification, but I am confident that we can continue to scale up our efforts. This google hangout offers a unique opportunity to discuss our road map for the future with industry leaders – be sure to save the date.”
