- 14 October 2010
LONDON, 14 October 2010: Dr Steve Howard has decided, and the Board has agreed, that he will step down as CEO of international NGO The Climate Group at the end of the year, in order to become Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA Group in January 2011, based in the Netherlands.
The Board of Directors, under the leadership of the Chairman John Coomber, will be making a further announcement on succession in the next four weeks. Until that announcement is made, Steve will work closely with The Climate Group’s Deputy CEO and International Policy Director, Mark Kenber, to ensure a smooth transition. He will remain CEO until the year end, and as a co-founder will remain involved and supportive of The Climate Group.
Steve Howard has served as The Climate Group’s CEO for the last seven years since co-founding the organization with Jim Walker and Alison Lucas in 2004. Steve was named Ernst & Young UK Social Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009 and his achievements have been endorsed by Time Magazine and Scientific American. He was named as one of the Independent on Sunday’s top 100 UK environmentalists in 2008.
Steve is a member of Vantage Point Venture Partners Advisory Board, a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Climate Change, a judge of the Virgin Earth Challenge and an Advisor to the Planetary Skin Institute. Before founding The Climate Group, Steve spent 15 years working with major corporations, NGOs and UN bodies on the environment including leading development of WWF’s Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Steve Howard said: "I am excited to be starting a new chapter with IKEA from next year – it is a company that has for many years put its environmental credentials at the heart of its business. It has been a privilege to serve as CEO of The Climate Group and as a founder I will remain very much involved and supportive of the important work that will be carried forward by my many friends here.
"Its international management team has established one of the world’s most powerful international coalitions of business and government leaders committed to putting in place the low carbon policies, technologies and finance urgently needed to make deep cuts in global emissions.
"It is a tribute to The Climate Group’s excellent management team around the world that its coalition of international business and governments has grown steadily in the last 12 months and that the organization is in such great shape to grow, despite the challenging political and economic outlook."
The Climate Group (www.theclimategroup.org) is an independent, not-for-profit organization working internationally with government and business leaders to advance smart policies and technologies to cut global emissions and unlock a clean industrial revolution. Its global coalition of companies, states, regions and cities around the world recognize the economic and environmental imperatives of taking decisive action now.
