The Climate Group led the morning bell-ringing ceremony at the NASDAQ Stock Market in New York City's Times Square on Tuesday in recognition of Climate Week NYC – an annual global forum to mobilize an international public-private response to climate change.
Climate Week NYC
consists of a series of high-profile events in the City exploring how greater dialogue between governments and business around low carbon policies, technologies and finance can unlock a clean industrial revolution. These climate change-related events come to New York City at the same time as world leaders and government representatives from 192 countries arrive in New York to attend the General Assembly Week at the United Nations.
As stated by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, “Climate Week NYC exists to focus the attention of world leaders on climate change and show innovative solutions that reduce emissions and create jobs."
In honor of Climate Week NYC, Boudewijn Poelmann, Chairman and Co-founder of the Dutch Postcode Lottery—a generous supporter of The Climate Group—visited the NASDAQ MarketSite in Times Square to ring the NASDAQ Opening Bell with Steve Howard, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of The Climate Group. Others in attendance included financiers of clean energy technologies, philanthropists, and representatives of The Climate Group’s member organizations.
Jenny Rosberg, Senior Vice President for the NASDAQ OMX Global Corporate Client Group, described the NASDAQ bell ringing as a logical way to bring attention to the Climate Group’s work and the role Climate Week NYC is playing to support the development of the clean technology industry in the US.
“Here at NASDAQ OMX, we support the goals of the Climate Group and have been a leader in the exchange community in engaging in and supporting clean energy initiatives. The Nasdaq stock exchange is the chosen home to clean energy companies such as A123, Tesla, and Sunpower Corp, amongst numerous others,” said Ms. Rosberg as she introduced the guests.
Additionally, Ms. Rosberg announced the NASDAQ OMX Clean Edge Green Index, Wednesday, which she described as “the most comprehensive family of indexes designed to track the green economy.”
An animated video created by The Climate Group to demonstrate how New Yorkers are battling climate change is being shown on the NASDAQ tower in Times Square throughout the week. It will also be playing in the back of taxi cabs throughout the five boroughs of New York City as an extension of Climate Week NYC.
“Using taxicabs as a platform to educate the public on environmental issues that directly impact society and are consistent with the Mayor’s climate change goals in PlaNYC is very exciting and we are proud that taxicabs can be used as the portal to communicate these messages,” said Commissioner, Chairman David Yassky.
Major television networks covering the market opening included CNBC, CNBC India, CNBC.com, Business News Network (Canada), Bloomberg & Bloomberg Brazil.
