Thwaites and Flannery Join Climate Leadership Group

Former Victorian Deputy Premier John Thwaites has been appointed chair of The °Climate Group in Australia. Recently retired from politics, Mr Thwaites was Victoria's first Minister for Climate Change. He will be joined on The °Climate Group's Australian Board by 2007 Australian of the Year Tim Flannery, who will be vice-chair.
Mr Thwaites said he intended to use the role to encourage both business and government to work together do more to address climate change. "The °Climate Group plays a critical role in bringing business and government together to address climate change," said Mr Thwaites. "I hope to use my experience in government to ensure Australian governments work with business to address this important issue."
Mr Flannery said he was impressed by the way The °Climate Group had effectively engaged some of the most influential individuals on the planet. "We need strong leadership on this issue. With The °Climate Group I hope to play a role in encouraging more business and political leaders of the need to take urgent action," said Mr Flannery. "The good news is that many businesses and governments have successfully demonstrated many of the solutions that are out there."
The °Climate Group's Australian Director Rupert Posner said he was delighted the two had volunteered to work with the not-for-profit group."You couldn't ask for two more qualified people to help advance action on climate change," said Mr Posner. "If 2007 was the year the world woke up to the issue of climate change, 2008 needs to be the year the world takes action.
"The °Climate Group is committed to working with leading governments and businesses around the world to advance action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Both John and Tim will play a critical role in helping us do this," he said.
