UK construction industry giants unite to back green growth

LONDON: Senior executives from the UK’s leading construction and property businesses have come together to urge the wider industry to embrace the economic opportunity of green buildings and infrastructure.
CEOs of 15 of the UK’s biggest construction businesses, including member of The Climate Group, Arup, as well as Balfour Beatty and Skanska UK, have set out their argument in a collection of essays published by the UK Green Building Council.
The senior executives, who head top companies ranging from design and construction firms to energy businesses and engineers, agree that sustainability is now central to business and that Government policy can help reach both environmental and economic goals.
Andrew Gould, International Director, Jones Lang Lasalle writes in the publication foreword that there is “potential for real business transformation, where sustainability is the inspiration for innovation”. He writes: “These are exciting times, and the opportunities are every bit as big as the challenges. Strong leadership is critical for this journey into an uncharted future. Business leaders are increasingly playing their part and Government needs to help by providing policy clarity and certainty so the industry can invest, innovate and deliver.”
In his essay ‘We shape a better world’, Robert Care, Group Board Director, Arup writes: “Organisations are seeing the advantage of greening, retrofitting and looking after their existing stock, and with changes in policy and strategy, sustainability will continue to move up the agenda.”
Mark Kenber, CEO, The Climate Group said: “The breadth of the industry leaders that share these essays verifies that the clean revolution is cemented into the most successful UK construction businesses. The companies that will survive and prosper despite economic uncertainty are the ones that collaborate, innovate and inspire, such as Arup. And with such powerful voices at the helm in the UK, it is only so long before the global construction industry is prioritizing green buildings and infrastructure, helping build a better future for all.”
