UK Prime Minister Praises Work of Together Campaign

Date
19 November 2007

The UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has praised the work of the consumer climate change campaign Together in his first major speech on climate change.

In his speech, Mr Brown told of how "impressed" he has been by the brands behind the Together campaign "who are empowering their customers to act" on climate change.

Together is a campaign that makes it easier for individuals to do something positive about climate change. It works with some of the nation's biggest brands to provide people with easy and affordable ways to reduce their impact. B&Q, Barclaycard, British Gas, M&S, More Th>n, National Express, O2 and Tesco have all launched initiatives through the campaign which has to date saved over 98,000 tonnes of {CO2}.

The Prime Minister asked Ian Cheshire, CEO of Together member B&Q along with co-chair Fiona Reynolds, Chief Executive of the National Trust, to spearhead a new working group that will recommend how business and civil society can work together with the government to encourage further individual action on climate change.

Welcoming the announcement, David Hall, Campaign Director of Together, says: "The Prime Minister's speech will inspire more UK companies to act on climate change. It's vital that business, government and civil society collaborate to develop solutions that will empower individuals to make a positive difference on climate change. It's easy to deal with climate change if we do it together."

The Prime Minister's speech underpinned the philosophy behind the Together campaign: "Working apart we will surely fail. But working together I have no doubt that this is a challenge to which the human spirit, and our powers of ingenuity and enterprise, will rise."

ABOUT 'TOGETHER'

  •  Together is a consumer engagement campaign designed to help UK households reduce {CO2} emissions by one tonne over three years. • Campaign partners include B&Q, Barclaycard, British Gas, BSkyB, Marks & Spencer, More Th>n, National Express, O2 and Tesco. The campaign is also supported by The Mayor of London, The Church of England, the Energy Saving Trust, Defra, the National Consumer Council, and Stop Climate Chaos.
