World’s most powerful wind turbine begins to spin

LONDON: An innovative prototype wind turbine has just produced its first electricity, which means the world’s most powerful turbine is now in operation.

The new V164-8.0 MW wind turbine, a joint venture between Vestas and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, produced its first kilowatt-hour of electricity this week from its home at the Danish National Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines.

The giant turbine is the world’s most powerful turbine because one unit is capable of supplying electricity for 7,500 average European households.

Businesses will benefit from the new turbine, as its 164 meter rotor diameters offer a swept area that is almost the size of three football pitches; and the bigger a turbine's swept area is, the bigger the revenue. It is also specifically built for offshore conditions and designed so that as little maintenance as possible is needed.

Anders Vedel, Chief Technology Officer, Vestas, said: “We have now completed the production, testing, and installation of the V164-8.0 MW as planned, thanks to the team’s intense effort during a time when Vestas has reduced its investments and lowered fixed costs. We now look forward to evaluating the turbine’s performance on site.”

Jens Tommerup, President of Vestas Offshore, said: “The V164-8.0 MW delivers industry-leading power output, based on Vestas’ proven technology solutions. Combined with the experience and capabilities of both Vestas and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, this puts us in a strong position in the growing offshore market.” 

Testing will continue over the next couple of months and full production of the turbines will begin in 2015.
