Electric Vehicles Program
EV technology presents a ready, viable and clear way to reduce our emissions.
Electric motors convert 75% of the chemical energy from the batteries to power the wheels – internal combustion engines only convert 20% of the energy stored in gasoline*. In the UK, for example, an electric car powered from today’s grid could emit between 15% and 40% less CO2 over its lifetime than a comparably sized gasoline car**. By serving as grid-connected batteries, EVs could also increase the effectiveness of renewable energy sources like wind and solar PV.
A fast transition to EVs will require partnerships between car makers, battery manufacturers, utilities, banks, and governments at all scales. We'll need to transform our transport infrastructure. We'll need a new supply of vehicles. And we'll need new financing models and policies to ensure market supply and demand.
We're working with our partners and extended network to make this happen. Together, we'll build the political will and the markets needed to scale up EVs quickly and effectively.

Facts about EVs
- Combined announcements of national targets for EV/PHEV penetration amount to 4 million vehicles by 2020*.
- In terms of range, EVs can practically fill over 95% of typical daily driving needs.
- Electric motors contain one moving part, versus 400 in a typical internal combustion engine.
- Each 10% cut in oil imports, and the resulting increase in domestic energy consumption, would add at least $60 billion to the U.S. economy.
- Most light vehicles are only used 4% of the time for transport in the US. That allows them to be connected to the grid – and potentially providing storage for utilities – up to 96% of the time.
- Lithium is non-toxic, light, has a high specific energy content, and is widely available.
- The world's automakers will introduce at least 120 hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric models onto the market by 2012**.

EV Policy Initiative Roundtable

Several cities and Regions encourage the use of electric vehicles as one of the solutions to cut GHG emissions, improve air quality, increase energy security through diversity, and bring potential green jobs to a region. The main areas of focus are infrastructure deployment, creating incentives and fostering technology development. Many interesting initiatives are currently underway in leading governments, regions, and cities, but data sharing and policy comparisons are not yet widely available identifying where policy works and leads to a higher uptake of EVs.
The EV20 data gathering and policy initiative led by The Climate Group and the Province of Quebec aims to create a global network of leading EV regions to systematically share and analyze their experiences in order to identify the most effective and cost efficient approaches.
At this Roundtable meeting we presented a first concept of how such a states and regions network on EV policy could function, what benefits could be gained from sharing data, experiences with ongoing activities and ideas on policy that would increase the rate of take up of EV technology.

UK Roundtable on Fleet Electrification

The Energy Saving Trust, Cenex, The Climate Group, TNT and Transport for London partnered to host a private meeting between commercial and government fleet managers, vehicle OEMs, Utilities and Lease Companies on July 6 2011.
The purpose of the UK Roundtable on Fleet Electrification is to enable the creation of a wider fleet buying consortium for electric drive vehicles within the UK and use its collective purchasing power to develop models for scaling up market penetration.

Electric vehicles for local sustainable mobility solutions

Polis and The Climate Group host a joint event at the The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT), Forbes House, Halkin Street, London, on the deployment of EVs (electric vehicles) in cities and regions across Europe and beyond.
- Highlighted efforts to accelerate electromobility at the urban and regional government level;
- Focused on the role of commercial and government vehicle fleets;
- Presented EV strategies from leading OEMs and national governments.
The event presents an opportunity for key stakeholders in EU electromobility to network, share best practice and deepen cooperation.
EV20 EV (electric vehicle) leadership summit at Shanghai’s World EXPO 2010

The Climate Group convened an EV (electric vehicle) leadership summit on May 3rd at the Monaco Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010 to explore how the world’s biggest and smallest countries are hoping to turn the world’s 1 billion vehicle fleet electric. The event also marked the release of a new report by The Climate Group “Towards Market Transformation: Electric Vehicles (China)”, co-authored by Bain & Company.

The Electric Vehicle Opportunity - Webinar

We hosted this webinar featuring Gary Kendall, Director, Energy and Climate, SustainAbility; Keith Collins, Advisor to Manitoba Provincial Government; and Mike Granoff, Head of Oil Independence Policies, Better Place. The conversation outlined the role of EVs in tackling climate change and energy insecurity, and factors that are convincing governments to promote EVs and consumers to buy them. Recent innovations enabling EVs to travel long distances and transport heavy goods, and the EV opportunity in both existing and emerging markets, were also discussed.
