Greening government through ICT: Insights from Europe

Technology impacts how we live and work every day. Innovative solutions that are enabled by information and communications technology (ICT), such as intelligent transportation, 'smart' buildings and teleworking, not only improve our daily activities, but they offer huge potential for increasing the energy and cost efficiency of our economies.

However, market and other barriers stand in the way of meeting this potential. The ICT industry cannot remove these barriers alone, but governments leading by example can play a huge role in catalyzing the necessary developments.

Greening government through ICT: Insights from Europe, analyzes the strategies that national governments are currently employing to foster ICT to improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of their own operations, by presenting case studies from six European countries as well as additional international examples.

The report highlights that while there is growing awareness of ICT's potential for the low-carbon agenda, and that governments are working to develop appropriate strategies, comprehensive plans to promote smart ICT across all policy areas are often still lacking, which means important opportunities for integration are being missed.

Based on insights from the case studies, this report offers measures needed to accelerate the scale of change that can be enabled by ICT.
