Climate Group welcomes the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed new rules to strengthen vehicle emission standards, a move that will drastically reduce pollution, improve public health, and save drivers money through increased fuel efficiency and improved vehicle maintenance costs.
The EPA’s new standards join key climate actions implemented over the past year, including historic clean vehicle investments from the Inflation Reduction Act. Climate Group has welcomed ambitious action taken by Under2 Coalition Co-Chair California and its Advanced Clean Car II rules, plus continued private fleet electrification across the EV100 membership.
EV100 is Climate Group’s global initiative that brings together companies committed to switching their owned and contracted fleets to electric vehicles and installing charging infrastructure for employees and customers by 2030. EV100+ is Climate Group’s new global initiative that brings together companies committed to kickstarting the transition to zero-emission medium and heavy-duty vehicles.
Reacting to the EPA’s news, Climate Group Executive Director for North America Angela Barranco said:
“Climate Group applauds the EPA’s new vehicle emissions standards as an ambitious step forward for the US electric vehicle market and a critical component of US climate action.
“Transportation is the number one source of greenhouse gas emissions in the US today. Heavy-duty trucks contribute a disproportionate amount of emissions and air pollutants that heavily impact community health. The proposed policies will energize the production and supply of electric vehicles, especially heavy-duty trucks. This will improve public health, boost corporate sustainability and fleet electrification plans, stimulate the next generation of EV investment, and put more money in the pockets of American consumers. EPA’s proposed rules are a great step forward and we call on them to finalize strong vehicle emission standards.

In 2022, Climate Group’s EV100 members called on President Biden to set more stringent light duty vehicle standards to boost EV investment at scale. We will continue to push with and on behalf of our members for more ambitious EV policy so as to help secure a net zero future.
