The Climate Group announces full agenda for Opening Ceremony of Climate Week NYC

NEW YORK: With four days to go until the start of Climate Week NYC, The Climate Group has announced the full agenda for the Opening Ceremony, with speakers including Lisa Jackson, Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, Apple, Rachel Notley, Premier of Alberta, and Philippe Couillard, Premier of Québec.

The Opening Ceremony, taking place at The TimesCenter on Monday, September 19, will feature a series of keynote addresses from global business and government leaders, as well as three high-level conversations, and Amy Davidsen, US Executive Director, The Climate Group, will deliver the morning’s opening remarks.

This will be followed by a high-profile conversation between Ernest Moniz, US Secretary of Energy and Rachel Kyte, CEO and Special Representative for the UN Secretary General for Sustainable Energy for All, highlighting the key achievements in climate and clean energy over the past four years, and what is needed over the coming decade to secure America’s prosperity and a net-zero emissions future.

The second discussion of the day will be introduced by Andrew Plepler, Environment Social and Governance Executive, Bank of America, and participants will include Premier Couillard, Eric Rondolat, CEO, Philips Lighting, Susan Aplin, CEO, bambeco, and Nancy Pfund, Founder, DBL Investors. The conversation will focus on the business models, financing mechanisms, policies and technological innovation and policies needed to accelerate the transition to a net-zero global economy.

The day will also feature a keynote speech by Lisa Jackson, who served in the past as the Administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is currently working as Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives at Apple.

Premier Notley will then introduce the Opening Ceremony’s third high-level conversation which will feature Jonathan Pershing, Climate Special Envoy, US State Department, Roland Busch, Managing Board of Siemens AG & Chief Sustainability Officer, and Jonathan Bass, Chief Communications Officer, SolarCity, and will focus on the global opportunities and barriers to the clean energy transition.

This discussion will be followed by a high-profile keynote address from the Government of Morocco that will look ahead to the COP22 United Nations climate summit taking place in Marrakech from November 7-18.

A special video presentation will then be made by Tim Pastore, President, National Geographic Channel before Damian Ryan, Acting CEO, The Climate Group delivers the Opening Ceremony’s closing remarks.

The Opening Ceremony will be live-streamed on The Climate Week's website, from 9:30am to 12:45pm ET.

The Opening Ceremony will be followed by a special event, hosted by Philips Lighting, in association with the World Green Building Council and The Climate Group, to announce bold new energy efficiency targets for buildings and infrastructure.

The event will bring together leaders from business and government to address the immediate opportunities that can drive energy efficiency through renovation including lighting, and in turn reduce emissions in both new and existing buildings.

The special event, RAISING THE STANDARD – A High-Level Progress Review and Call to Action on Buildings and Renovation, will focus on the urgent need for accelerated energy-efficient renovation in buildings and infrastructure around the globe to support the climate goals set out in the Paris Agreement.
