The Right Honourable Gregory Barker, Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change in the last government and a member of the board of The Climate Group  has today been appointed to the House of Lords.

Speaking on his appointment, Greg said: "I’m very honoured to be elevated to the House of Lords. I am looking forward to playing a part in the life of the Upper Chamber. I will be keen to support the work of The Climate Group and its progressive voice for low carbon business in the future."

Mark Kenber, The Climate Group CEO, said: “Today’s announcement is recognition of the hugely significant contribution of Greg to public life, including his time as Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change and the Prime Minister’s envoy on climate change. He is a passionate advocate of the business and financial case of decarbonising the economy. He will be a powerful voice in the House of Lords for a strong, low carbon economy."

The former Minister led the transformation of the Conservative approach to the climate and ‘green’ issues, and accompanied David Cameron on his famous trip to the Arctic in 2006. Ha was the longest serving UK energy minister in a generation, and during his time in office he oversaw the creation of the Green Investment Bank, and a massive expansion of decentralised energy including the deployment of 4GW of Solar PV and the launch of the world first Renewable Heat Incentive.

Greg has represented the UK at all major International Climate negotiations since 2010 and has taken a lead role mobilising climate finance for developing countries. Greg stood down from Government in July 2014, but then acted as The Prime Minister’s personal Climate Change Envoy up to the General Election, when he then retired from the House of Commons.
