Low Carbon Leaders of the Decade Announced by Business Week and The Climate Group

12 December 2005

The Low Carbon Leaders Awards, awarded by Business Week, were presented last night at a special ceremony at the MOP1 meeting in Montreal. The awards which include recognition of emission reduction and leadership on climate change over the last ten years, have been sponsored by The Climate Group.

The awards range from big business to the individual. They cover the great and the small, the local and the global. The Fortune 500 Company, DuPont has been recognised for its outstanding record on absolute green house gas emissions (GHG) reduction. It achieved an incredible 72% reduction of GHG between 1990 and 2003 and has saved $2 billion since 1990 by reducing its energy consumption. Meanwhile, the small town of Woking in the UK beat off competition from many larger cities. Its award is in recognition of its staggering 40% reduction of energy consumption in municipal buildings on 1990 levels in 2001. Woking reduced {CO2} emissions 77% on 1990 levels in 2004 and saved £5.4 million in municipal energy and water bills since 1990 as a result.

"These awards are a clear recognition of how important leadership is in tackling climate change, "said Dr Steve Howard of The Climate Group. "These are the best examples of companies, cities, states and individuals who have taken a dynamic and pro-active approach to the issue. They have seen that the solutions to climate change are possible, available and cost effective. Our global future will be driven by a low carbon economy, and those already embracing this future are reaping the benefits."

Note to editors:

1. The Climate Group is a new charity which is working to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by assembling a leadership coalition of the world's most pro-active companies, cities, states and governments. We focus on showing that solutions to prevent the worst impacts of climate change already exist and are possible, practical and affordable.

2. Methodology: The Climate Group has adopted a two-step research methodology to run these Awards. Firstly, we carried out an objective gathering of all available data and critical scrutiny of the results by a diverse panel of nine judges with long and specialised experience (see panel list at www.theclimategroup.org). Secondly, in order to assess the many significant and relevant responses to climate change in as structured a fashion as possible, The Climate Group developed nine categories of low carbon performance. Some of these categories are strictly quantitative, others more qualitative or behavioural. The Climate Group relied heavily on the data contained in the Carbon Disclosure Project database and on the assistance of the Project's principal analysts and technical advisors, Innovest Strategic Value Advisors.
