Vertical integration: Key to meeting India’s climate goals (webinar)

Feb 22 2022, 10:30 UTC - Feb 22 2022, 11:40 UTC

4:00 PM IST to 5:10 PM IST

With a total of 1,049 cities and local governments across 76 countries, pledging to the Race to Zero (R2Z), cities were noted as the biggest group of governments committing to keeping global heating to 1.5°C at COP26. It is estimated that their collective action has the potential to reduce global emissions by at least 1.4 gigatons annually by 2030. In addition, 260 states and regions, members of the Under2 Coalition, committed to accelerating immediate equitable and science-based climate action. These members, with almost 2 billion people globally, have the potential to reduce global emissions by 4.9 – 5.2 gigatons annually by 2030.

Active participation from both state and city governments will be vital to meet the ambitious clean energy and climate goals announced by the national government and catalyse a carbon neutral cross-sectoral growth. Climate Group and C40 Cities invite you to join us for a discourse on strengthening sub-national climate action in India with vertical integration at state and city levels as its core driver. The event will convene key stakeholders from the national, state, city and district levels to unlock opportunities and reinforce the need for multi-stakeholder coordination and collaboration to accelerate the transition to a just, green and resilient future.

The forum will aim to deliberate on the following key questions to vertically align and strengthen sub-national climate action in India beyond CoP26,

  • What do COP26 and India’s new and ambitious climate targets mean for sub-national entities i.e., ward, district, cities and states?
  • How can vertical alignment at various levels of governance drive sub-national climate action to meet India’s climate targets?
  • What are the avenues where coordination among ward, district, cities and states need to strengthen? What are the inherent challenges in doing so?
  • What role can existing government programs and funding mechanisms play in influencing multi-level decision making to build sub-national climate action?
  • What role can non-state actors such as civil society organisations play to strengthen vertical integration of climate actions and policies at sub-national levels?

Join us for this discourse on February 22nd at 4 pm IST. Register for the webinar here.
