US Climate Action Summit 2022

April 21, 2022

We invite our member businesses, governments, and wider North American networks to join us virtually for the inaugural US Climate Action Summit digital day on April 21, 2022 to increase momentum and drive US climate action at all levels.

For years, states, cities, businesses, and the public have driven US climate action. Now, with a renewed federal climate agenda, and on the verge of the largest investment in the clean economy, this is our chance to limit warming to 1.5°C and rebuild the clean economy in this decade.

What's on the agenda?

Our 2022 digital agenda will present two 60-minute plenary sessions, and a series of breakout, closed-door roundtables designed to promote shared learning and build connections across our initiatives. The goal is to advance state climate strategies and business ambition by fostering cross-sector partnerships, increased ambition, and innovative solutions that leverage federal climate funding.

Opening plenary

12:00pm - 1:00pm ET

Delivering the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

The $1.2 trillion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) is the largest investment in the US clean economy. What states and businesses do next will determine the future success of US climate action.

But does the BIL and federal financing, have the potential to reshape the US clean economy and what other support do states and businesses - who have been leading on climate action - need to raise their climate agendas and accelerate their plans?

Discussion topics:

  • What are the most lasting impacts that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) can have on lasting climate action?
  • How can federal, state and business collaboration build the foundations of an inclusive, clean economy while ensuring BIL spending is used to drive significant greenhouse gas reductions?
  • Does the BIL lay the foundations for US decarbonization and what more will be required?

North American roundtable sessions

2:00pm – 3:00pm ET

North American roundtable sessions

States and business have driven progress towards net zero emissions in the US, but they can't achieve this alone. If policymakers, business leaders and civil society work together, we can deliver the real-world emissions reductions we need in this decade. This series of roundtables invites participants from across our networks to collaborate on climate-smart solutions that can deliver a sustainable and inclusive economic transformation while addressing federal and state-based climate goals.

Closing plenary

4:00pm – 5:00pm ET

Building a just and equitable economy

Justice40 aims to ensure BIL funds have an equity lens. But how do we maintain momentum on climate justice and provide meaningful investment to embed equity into the clean economy to deliver a just transition given recent developments in the capital?

As we plan and transition to net zero, adopt and deploy clean technologies and solutions, and implement climate policies, equity and justice must be at the heart of our decisions and projects. The closing sessions discusses how, regardless of the means, we can ensure people are placed at the heart of this transition to a cleaner economy and we invest in equity sufficiently.

Discussion topics:

  • Will the BIL create a more just and equitable economy, what more will be required through states and business action?
  • Why is funding support so critical for a just transition and what impact will the America Competes bill have?
  • How can we ensure this renewed federal climate agenda, state-based net zero plans, and business action underpin and create American jobs and just transition?

What are the themes?

This year's program will focus on co-developing solutions on:

  • Delivering the clean energy economy: How combining renewed federal commitments, state-based net zero strategies and private sector investment and innovation can deliver the clean energy economy
  • Embedding climate justice: Integrating climate justice, inclusions, and equity into our transition to a net zero economy
  • The US energy transition: How the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law can expand opportunities to accelerate new energy economy infrastructure
  • ZEV infrastructure: Leveraging the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to deploy national zero-emission vehicle infrastructure
  • Scope 3 at speed and scale: Acting on supply chain energy emission at speed and scale through greater collaboration

"Here at home, we have to do our part or we will not be able to make the kind of worldwide change that climate change demands. We’re going to power our economy with clean energy. We’re going to do that in a way that will produce millions of American jobs. And we’re going to make sure that nobody is left behind."

Gina McCarthy, White House National Climate Advisor
