Our impact

The Climate Group is an international non-profit, founded in 2004, with offices in London, New Delhi and New York. Our mission is to accelerate climate action. Our goal is a world of no more than 1.5°C of global warming and greater prosperity for all.

We do this by bringing together powerful networks of business and governments that shift global markets and policies. We act as a catalyst to take innovation and solutions to scale, using the power of communications to build ambition and pace. We focus on the greatest global opportunities for change.

See our current projects and events.

Since we were founded, some of our greatest achievements include:

We founded and organize Climate Week NYC, the annual summit of high-level government and business leaders focused on driving the transition to a low carbon economy. We also mobilized world leaders in support of California’s trailblazing AB32 law in 2006, the first major government legislation to cut carbon emissions. Read our American Clean Revolution report which concludes that the transition to a clean energy economy could create more than 1 million new US jobs.

We brought together leaders in government, business and society to drive thought leadership and build transformative public-private partnerships in our Clean Revolution campaign. Supported by the UN and World Bank, we also launched a group of influential Clean Revolution Ambassadors and are developed an online evidence resource to profile successful low carbon innovation and leadership.

Our hugely influential China Redesign program, which was at the heart of Chinese government, helped the country's leaders to implement radical low carbon goals, change the face of urbanization and create new climate finance mechanisms.

Our work with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair to build support among world leaders for a global climate deal, Breaking the Climate Deadlock, showed how major emission reductions could be achieved.

The massively successful global program trialling LED lighting technology in 12 major cities across five continents, became the driving force of our campaign for an International Standard on low carbon outdoor street lighting.

In 2008 we formed a partnership with the world’s leading financial institutions to create an industry framework for addressing the risks of climate change and financing clean energy and technology.

SMART 2020

SMART 2020: enabling the low carbon economy in the information age, is the ground-breaking study which showed how ICT could reduce global CO2 emissions by 15% and save businesses US$900 billion. Through our connected Agile Cities program, we guided cities on how they can procure the latest smart technologies.

Launched by The Climate Group, the Voluntary Carbon Standard became the world’s most popular standard for voluntary emissions offsetting. It has since changed its name to the Verified Carbon Standard.

The Climate Group States & Regions brought together sub-national government leaders from around the world in a powerful, high-profile network to share expertise, demonstrate impact and influence the international climate dialogue. Our members represented some of the most economically powerful regions in the world and included governments from across Europe, the Americas, South Asia, Australia and Africa. States & Regions members collectively accounted for 313 million people, 11% of global GDP and 2.3 Gigatons CO2e.

First released in 2004, these reports changed the climate debate forever and demonstrated the huge economic opportunities of going low carbon. Read the third edition.
