Fossil Fuels, Equity and a Global Just Transition

Apr 21 2021, 16:00 UTC - Apr 21 2021, 17:00 UTC

Apr 21 2021, 12:00 EDT - Apr 21 2021, 13:00 EDT

Fossil fuels are the main cause of the climate crisis yet the Paris Agreement doesn't even mention oil, gas or coal. Despite plunging costs for renewable energy, government subsidies and support for fossil fuels have held back a global energy transition.

Join youth and Indigenous leaders, academic, civil society, government, for a discussion of the fossil fuel threat we face now and the need for new mechanisms to end expansion, wind down production in keeping with 1.5ºC and accelerate a global transition to clean energy.

Participants will connect the use of international treaties to address nuclear weapons, landmines and other global threats and outline the critical importance of centering a fossil fuel phase-out equitable with wealthy, fossil fuel producing countries leading and supporting other nations to be part of the transition.
