This Clean Air Day (20 June 2019) Helen Clarkson, CEO of international non-profit The Climate Group highlights the vital role that business can play in leading the switch to EVs and significantly cutting air pollution:

“Electric vehicles provide a key solution in cutting air pollution globally. With businesses running over half of all new vehicles on the road*, it is critical they make the switch to EVs, and play their part in bringing down emissions and cleaning up our air.

“There are big opportunities for companies taking action – from savings on fuel and maintenance to helping future proof operations as low emissions zones are introduced globally – EVs make business sense. Investing in the switch outweighs any upfront cost.

“Already through our global EV initiative EV100, members are electrifying over two million vehicles globally. Through their investment, and influence on millions of staff and customers worldwide, businesses can significantly enhance demand. This Clean Air Day, we are calling on them to join us in helping make EVs the new normal.”

Clean Air Day is the UK's largest air pollution campaign and is co-ordinated by the charity Global Action Plan. Each year hundreds of events take place across the country to raise awareness of how air pollution affects health and what can be done to tackle it.

Air pollution is on the rise worldwide, causing 4.2 million deaths a year globally, and costing the economy US$2.6 trillion annually.

About EV100

EV100 is a global initiative by The Climate Group bringing together forward-looking companies committed to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and making electric transport the new normal by 2030. The transport sector accounts for approximately 23% of global energy-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Electric transport offers a major solution, as well as curbing transport related air and noise pollution. With businesses owning over half of all registered vehicles on the road, it is crucial they lead the shift to electric vehicles through their investment decisions and influence on millions of staff and customers worldwide. By setting out their future EV purchasing requirements on an ambitious timescale, companies can increase demand, drive mass roll-out, and make electric cars more rapidly affordable for everyone.
