The International Energy Agency (IEA)  estimates that improvements in energy efficiency can deliver over 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions reductions needed to meet global climate goals. In addition to enabling a faster shift to renewables, energy efficiency improvements add enormous value to global GDP and boost companies’ bottom lines.

  • The business case

    Energy productivity is the ratio of economic output to energy consumption – so improving energy productivity means getting more economic output out of every unit of energy consumed.   

    Focusing on improving energy productivity enables companies to apply a financial lens to their energy use and empowers them to align their business growth with sustainability targets.  

    By implementing energy efficient technology, digitalizing systems and changing operational behavior, businesses maximize the ‘services’ provided by each unit of energy they consume, helping to increase overall productivity. 

    From retail and real estate to  manufacturing and heavy industry,  EP100 members are  generating green growth and improving competitiveness  while banking substantial cost savings. 

    They are also driving wider economic benefits by helping to reduce primary energy demand and advance energy efficient technologies  and practices.  Research  by the IEA suggests this will add US$18 trillion to global GDP through 2035, while a 2015 report for ClimateWorks showed energy efficiency will reduce the cost of related decarbonization efforts by up to US$2.8 trillion.

  • Commitment pathways

    To become a member of EP100, companies choose among three commitments:

    Commitment  What's involved
    Double Energy Productivity

    A company commits to doubling its economic output from every unit of energy it consumes globally within 25 years, with a baseline year of 2005 at the earliest. The company chooses a relevant energy productivity metric (e.g. revenue/gigajoules (GJ) of energy) to track and report.

    Implement an Energy Management System

    A company commits to implementing an energy management system (EnMS) in each of its facilities within 10 years and commits to an energy productivity target. Deploying an EnMS is a foundational step toward improving energy productivity.

    Net Zero Carbon Buildings 

    A company commits to owning, occupying and developing buildings that operate at net zero carbon emissions by 2030. A net zero carbon building reduces energy demand, is highly energy efficient and is fully powered by renewable electricity. This commitment is led by the World Green Building Council, and gives insight to a company’s emissions, energy demand reductions, and renewable energy solutions from an asset and portfolio level.  


  • How we work

    The Climate Group shares the compelling business case for increasing energy efficiency, encourages knowledge-sharing and peer-learning through webinars and events, and showcases member leadership through speaking slots at key events, digital media and media outreach.

    EP100 is delivered as part of the We Mean Business coalition. Alongside renewable power and electric vehicles, making smarter use of energy is a practical step companies can take to lower their emissions, future-proof their business and demonstrate climate leadership.

  • EP100 Cooling Challenge

    As the world warms up, demand for cooling is growing at an alarming rate. With electricity demand from air conditioning alone set to more than triple by 2050, major companies can play a leading role in mitigating climate impact, by investing in energy efficient cooling that will also generate substantial financial savings.

    Through the EP100 Cooling Challenge, EP100 members commit to identifying ways of cooling their operations as efficiently as possible – optimizing the contribution of efficient, clean cooling in meeting their energy productivity goals.

    Why get involved?

    EP100 members can reduce emissions from cooling by investing in smarter, more efficient technology and practices that also boost the bottom line and improve competitiveness. No wonder companies are signing up.

    The first 10 companies to come on board may be eligible to receive a pro bono Level 1 Energy Audit by industry-leading ASHRAE in one facility. The audit will include a preliminary energy use assessment and site visit from an ASHRAE representative, who will suggest appropriate cooling efficiency measures.

    How to participate

    Companies who step up to the challenge can be existing EP100 members or those joining the EP100 initiative at the same time.

    Once on board, the company will use a checklist provided by The Climate Group to identify energy efficient measures (EEMs) in at least one major facility, and report back to The Climate Group. Companies must complete no/low-cost EEMs by 15 October 2020. Investment grade retrofits must be implemented by the EP100 target year.
