Off-Grid Energy Financing

In 2015, we carried out a major study on sustainable, clean energy and off-grid business models in rural India, supported by the Goldman Sachs Foundation.

It focused on evaluating financial, social and environmental returns on clean energy investments, in order to boost private sector confidence and mobilize investment capital in this space.

In February 2015, in partnership with Goldman Sachs Center for Environmental Markets, The Climate Group launched the report, The Business Case for Off-Grid Energy in India at an event in New Delhi.

The report looks at innovative business models in India's off-grid energy sector that have the greatest potential to achieve scale, and shows both how businesses can invest in and support the fast-growing sector.

By identifying models that can meet future capacity demands and providing recommendations on how to address key challenges to scalability, the report aims to facilitate greater private sector engagement and investments.

Key observations from the report include:

  • Market size of the decentralized renewable energy (DRE) sector will be US$150 million by 2018 largely driven by B2B revenues, and we conservatively estimate the market size for solar home systemsto grow 60% per year to reach a market size of US$200-250 million by 2018.
  • With financing support, we estimate 7.2 million under-electrified households will be able to afford a solar home system by 2018.
  • DRE companies are exploring new types of technology to increase operational efficiency.
  • Along with governmental policy focus, there is a clear need for greater private sector involvement in renewables in the off-grid space - and investment is already growing.

We have also created a series of photo facts using data from the report and pictures from our Bijli - Clean Energy for All project in India on Flickr. Feel free to download and share them on social media using hashtag #Bijli.
