The Under2 Coalition brings together over 220 governments representing more than 1.3 billion people and 43% of the global economy.
Our members commit to keeping global temperature rises to well below 2°C with efforts to reach 1.5°C. 29 states and regions in the Coalition have committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050 or earlier.
The Climate Group is the Secretariat to the Under2 Coalition and works with governments to accelerate climate action through three workstreams:
- Policy action
The Under2 Coalition has five co-chairs who guide the direction of our policies - California, South Chungcheong (Chungnam), KwaZulu-Natal, Querétaro and Scotland.
We also have a larger steering group, representing the diversity of our membership, which meets quarterly and supports the co-chairs in building the range and scope of the Under2 Coalition's work.
Do you represent a state or region committed to climate action?
We will shortly be launching a new campaign with Regions4 drawing attention to the importance of including states and regions at international climate meetings.
What's at state? will elevate the voices of regional governments ahead of the crucial COP26 summit in Glasgow this November by demonstrating what each state or region stands to lose if countries do not keep to the Paris Agreement targets and take urgent action. It will also reinforce the visibility of the work regional governments are doing to set and realise net zero emission targets, as well as implement adaptation actions to reduce vulnerability and achieve the resilience in each territory.
Mobilising global state and regional leadership on net zero ambition
Through our new Net Zero Futures project, in partnership with the Scottish Government and Bloomberg Philanthropies, we're connecting Under2 Coalition members with existing net zero targets with states and regions interested in increasing their ambition.
To accelerate emissions reductions in line with the Paris Agreement and raise ambition in 2021, we need to empower state and regional governments to set net zero targets and join the UN's Race to Zero campaign.
