Terry Tamminen, US Energy and Environmental Strategist Joins The Climate Group

28 March 2007

The Climate Group is pleased to announce that Terry Tamminen has joined our team as Senior Advisor.

"Terry brings a unique skill set and experience to The Climate Group which combined with his phenomenal energy should help us grow and deepen our State membership into a world changing vanguard group," said Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group.

"Terry will be advising The Climate Group and our network on leadership of State and regional governments and assisting us in honing our strategy to inspire government and business to lead the way towards a low carbon economy whilst boosting profitability and competitiveness."

The Climate Group works with State governments to facilitate and support ambitious state-level climate action with the goal of exposing best practices and policies adopted by sub-national governments worldwide. The Climate Group also facilitates interaction between the business community and State leaders.

The Climate Group convened last summer's roundtable discussion with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Prime Minister Tony Blair and a select group of prominent CEOs and business leaders from leading California and international companies to share ideas on how business and government can work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The roundtable resulted in a historic cooperation agreement between the UK and California to advance the deployment of clean energy and clean technologies and a Leadership Statement on Climate Change signed by twelve of the participating CEOs.

"I am thrilled to join The Climate Group team, because no other organization has been more effective at demonstrating that reducing greenhouse gases increases the bottom line, proving that what's good for the environment is also good for the economy," said Tamminen. "The Climate Group helped me in my years in California government to bring together visionary leaders in business, government, and community groups who are solving the climate crisis."

From his youth in Australia to career experiences in Europe, Africa and all parts of the United States, Terry has developed expertise in business, farming, education, non-profit, the environment, the arts, and government. An accomplished author, Terry's latest book, Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction, examines our dependence on oil and a strategy to evolve to more sustainable energy sources.

In 1993, Terry founded the Santa Monica BayKeeper and served as its Executive Director for six years. He co-founded Waterkeeper programs in San Diego, Orange County, Ventura, and Santa Barbara. He also served for five years as Executive Director of the Environment Now Foundation in Santa Monica, CA and co-founded the Frank G. Wells Environmental Law Clinic at the School of Law, University of California Los Angeles.

Terry was appointed as the Secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency in November, 2003 and Cabinet Secretary, the Chief Policy Advisor to the Governor, in December, 2004. He currently lectures and provides private consulting services to a variety of clients, including advising the Governor of California on energy and environmental policy.

Terry has received countless awards and honors for his achievements and has served on numerous civic and charitable boards and commissions, including the Southern California Wetlands Recovery Project, the U.S. Navy Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station Restoration Advisory Board, the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Safety Committee and the Wishtoyo Foundation, a group that preserves natural resources through Chumash Indian traditional teachings.
