Tony Blair launches The Climate Group’s new program supporting low carbon corporate action in China

IKEA, Tesco China, TaoBao and China Electricity Council join The Climate Group to launch the "Carbon Treasure - China's Corporate Carbon Strategy" Program in Beijing

BEIJING, 8 November 2010: International NGO The Climate Group today launched a new low carbon business initiative in Beijing, China with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Vice President of the Chinese Society on Sustainable Development and Director of the Low-Carbon Economy Research Group, Mr. Zhang Kunmin, and Secretary-General of the China Electricity Council, Mr. Wang Zhixuan.

The Climate Group’s new business programme – "Carbon Treasure - China`s Corporate Carbon Strategy" – is the first long-term corporate low-carbon strategy ‘hub’ established in China by an NGO and has been specifically designed for Chinese businesses. The program will work with Chinese business leaders at a local level to enhance awareness of climate change, explore opportunities for low-carbon development, and ultimately to help companies develop appropriate and beneficial low-carbon strategies. The program will incorporate an educational element making the business case for low carbon action and will generate a suite of best practice examples from leading corporations that will be used to inspire others to act. The unique program is supported by domestic and foreign government agencies, leading academic and policy research institutions, industry leaders, community groups, media and international agencies which will provide the project with a multitude of resources.

Speaking in Beijing at the launch, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair said: “Enterprises are the backbone in low carbon development. They play vanguard roles in technological innovation and low carbon practices, to reduce the effect that business activities bring to the environment and climate. Some leading international companies have already incorporated low-carbon development into their corporate strategy, brand building and supply chain operations. Chinese companies also realize the need to act effectively in regards to low-carbon development.”

The Climate Group’s Greater China Director, Changhua Wu explained, “Many modern businesses need only to incorporate a low-carbon strategy into their business model to become more competitive, stronger, and successful. More and more enterprises are realizing that the sooner they prepare for the low-carbon revolution, the better off they will be when it comes to controlling risk and seizing new business opportunities. Ping An, Taobao, Qu Mei Furniture, IKEA, Tesco China, and other leading enterprises have joined with the China Electricity Council and other industry organizations to support this important program to help unlock significant low carbon gains for businesses and their bottom lines.”

About The Carbon Treasure Program:

The Carbon Treasure program’s advisory committee features a number of low-carbon and business strategy experts, including: State Department Counselor, Mr. Xu Dingming, IEEPA Energy Steering Committee Chairman, Mr. Shen Longhai, China Climate Change Expert, Ms. Yu Jie, HSBC Asia Pacific Sustainable Development Senior Vice-President, Mr. Barry Kwong, Carbon Disclosure Project China Director, Mr. Li Rusong, and The Climate Group Greater China Director, Ms. Wu Changhua.

PHASE 1: The “Carbon Treasure” program`s first phase (2010-2011) will focus on three industries where the potential to make significant “Carbon Gains” have been identified: electricity generation, finance, and supply chain management. Using industry research, trainings and seminars, site-visits and other efforts, The Climate Group will work closely with Chinese companies to develop low-carbon strategies to cut emissions, to discuss the Chinese characteristics of low-carbon strategy development, and to recognize and grasp the opportunities and benefits of a low-carbon development plan. This first phase of the program will prepare a general corporate carbon strategy guide as well as a series of industry-specific guides to assist Chinese enterprises in adopting successful roadmaps.

PHASE 2: The “Carbon Treasure” program`s second phase will broaden the number of Chinese companies in the program and look to deepen cooperation, it will track progress and analyse made to date. Using a variety of external communication channels, successful corporate case studies and best practice will be shared not just within China’s industry sectors but across them in an effort to inspire other companies to join the Carbon Treasure program and develop their own low-carbon strategies. The second phase of the project will continue to refine and update its advice and will champion a low-carbon society and sustainable economic development in China by identifying common problems and proposing practical solutions.
