NEW YORK: In an interview for Climate TVThe Climate Group’s India Director Krishnan Pallassana talks about our project Bijli – Clean Energy for All, which has brought clean and affordable solar energy to over 60,000 people in 4 states in India.

During Climate Week NYC 2015, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said of the Bijli – Clean Energy for All project: “I welcome efforts that bring governments, businesses and communities together to build a sustainable future. Ensuring access to affordable and clean energy is an essential part of the Sustainable Development Goals. It can improve health while fighting climate change, and point the way towards lives of dignity for all."

In this Climate TV interview, Krishnan Pallassana also reiterates the importance of connecting Indian citizens to clean and cheap energy, pointing out that there is a strong business case for renewable, decentralized energy as well: “India cannot grow unless 300 million people classified as poor come out of the poverty cycle. Imagine 20 years down the line, instead of 300 poor people we have almost 1 billion middle class people in India. What a business opportunity! That growth has to be inclusive and equitable. Evidence shows, that investment in a low carbon future, in renewable energy, leads to inclusive growth and prosperity for everyone.”

The India Director also stresses the democratic model of the Bijli project, in which local partners work together with villagers and governments. “Access to clean and affordable energy is fundamental for growth. With our Bijli – Clean Energy for All project we created a win win win win situation: the people that use the solar energy are better off, the small local enterprises that sell it make a living, the investors in these enterprises have their return on investment and for the India Government, clean renewable energy is one of the priorities.”

The Climate Group recently released a compelling 6 minute video on the Bijli – Clean energy for all project, which premiered in front of an audience of over 200 decision makers and representatives from the Indian Government at India’s first Off-Grid Energy Summit, organized by The Climate Group in New Delhi, as well as Climate Week NYC.
