NEW YORK: The Opening Day of Climate Week NYC today highlights a key success for The Climate Group: Bijli - Clean energy for all, with a new video showcasing the inspiring initiative which is connecting rural communities in India with clean energy.

The project, principally funded by the Dutch Postcode Lottery, seeks to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and simultaneously enhance the lives of rural villagers in India. Bijli - which means ‘electricity’ in Hindi - and the project aims to provide clean and cheap renewable and solar-powered energy, while identifying sustainable off-grid renewable energy business models.

During a networking lunch hosted by The Climate Group as part of the opening day ceremony, Krishnan PallassanaIndia DirectorThe Climate GroupMarieke Van SchaikManaging DirectorDutch Postcode Lottery and Namita VikasSenior President & Country Head,Responsible BankingYES Bank, updated the audience on the successes and achievements of the project and the importance of innovative finance mechanisms to scale up energy access.

With over 400 million people in India still not connected to the electricity grid, it is imperative to provide access to a suitable renewable energy. To date, rural villagers in Indiarely on kerosene to light their homes. But such fuel is inefficient and dirty.

Kerosene and diesel lamps generate indoor air pollution, which kills 4.3 million people each year, almost twice the figures of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV AIDS combined. Even those with access to the national grid have serious reliability issues. In 2012, 700 million people in India where plunged into darkness because of the biggest power failure in human history.

The solution for this important development need is simple: solar energy. India has 300 days of sunshine per year. With decentralised mini-grids backed by sustainable revolving fund mechanisms, Bijli has already connected 22,500 people - aiming to connect over 50,000 by the end of 2015 - to solar power in India alone.

With the support of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, The Climate Group is engaged in discussions to set up a finance pool to mobilise private investments to connect even more people.

The Climate Group is delivering this program by working with local delivery partners across three different off-grid electrification models (hand-held lights, home-lighting systems and micro-grids) in the states of Maharashtra, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, India.
