Social Good Summit mobilizes Generation Y for climate action

NEW YORK: The Social Good Summit convened world leaders and celebrities including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Helen Clark of the UNDP, Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Lopez this weekend, to inspire a younger audience to unlock the potential of technology and drive action on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Social Good Summit is a two-day conference focused on the positive impact of technology and social media around the world, and is an affiliate event of Climate Week NYC, which is organized by The Climate Group.

The theme this year was #2030NOW, asking the question: what type of world do we want to live in by the year 2030 – and how do we secure it now?

Drawing on social media connectivity to solve real world social problems, panelists discussed the power of technology to empower people around the world in a global community. Mozambican politician and humanitarian Graca Michel underscored: “Every one of us are responsible for the future of all of us.”

The Opening Ceremonies began with an official address from United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who emphasized the impact of individual action to realize a common vision of a “life of dignity for all”.

Then each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals were introduced to the audience in a series of personal messages from representatives and ambassadors of the United Nations, business and global NGOs.

World leaders of the 193 United Nations members formally adopted the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during Climate Week NYC last week. SDGs are widely accepted as the strongest international agenda to bring an end to global poverty that has ever existed. They aim to address the interlinked problems of inequality, hunger and climate change by 2030 through 17 key themes, including access to clean energy and building sustainable cites.

Richard Curtis, Director, Writer, Producer and Founder of Project Everyone, introduced the event as “a massive invitation for everyone here today to become involved”. He addressed the importance of radical social collaboration between everyone from NGOs, business people and youth to elders and citizens from both developed and developing nations, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, stating: “We each have the power to change an enormous number of lives.”

Advocates included Helen Clark of the UNDP, Victoria Beckham of UNAID, Jennifer Lopez actress and founder of Lopez Family Foundation, Kathy Calvin of the United Nations Foundation and more, who each concluded with the same resounding directive– to tell everyone about the SDGs.
