3 Climate Group asks for the UK Budget

Ahead of the UK Budget (28 October), Helen Clarkson, CEO, Climate Group, says: “This Budget is Andy Burnham’s chance to start shaping an energy future that delivers long-term affordability and resilience for the UK. This year has shown how exposed we are to global fossil fuel markets, with consumers’ bills rising because of conflicts elsewhere.

The UK needs to electrify as fast as possible and make switching to clean electricity affordable and attractive for households and businesses. This is a long-term project, but now is not the time to sacrifice progress to protect incumbent interests.

We’re asking the Chancellor to:

  1. Move policy levies from electricity bills into general taxation, where they belong. Making electricity the cheapest form of energy must be the Government’s priority.
  2. Invest in renewables infrastructure and a wider electrification strategy. Bold moves now mean a new energy system can deliver long-term savings and stability faster.
  3. Set a clear timeline for phasing out all fossil fuel subsidies and skilling up the UK workforce to deliver clean energy.”
