RE100: Annual disclosure report
Global businesses are making progress towards 100% renewable electricity, but many say policy, market and procurement barriers are still slowing adoption and limiting access to the renewable energy they need.
Leading companies switching to 100% renewables are citing “limited supply and cost” as the biggest barrier in key markets, followed by a “lack of procurement options” and “regulatory barriers”.
Key findings
- Companies are advancing at pace towards 100% renewables in several key markets, with major increases in members’ use in South Africa (from 54% to 84%) and Mexico (from 38% to 52%).
- Increases are smaller across challenging Asian markets such as Indonesia (33% -> 35%) or Japan (36% -> 40%).
- In markets where the highest number of RE100 companies cite barriers, procurement is lagging most:
- In South Korea, renewables account for just 12% of members’ energy use. This is unchanged from last year. The share of companies procuring 100% is just 5%.
- In Taiwan, RE100 companies met 6% of their energy needs with renewables. Only 9% of members procure 100% renewables.
- In Singapore, renewables make up 6% of members’ use – up 1% from last year.
“The world’s leading companies are hungry for renewables, and their investments are shaping a smarter new energy future for all. But grid bottlenecks, regulatory constraints, and market inefficiencies are restricting what they can buy. Governments serious about shielding their economies from the devastating effects of fossil fuel instability need to urgently break down these barriers.”

“The data is clear: corporate demand for renewable electricity is growing, but access is not keeping pace. In too many markets, limited supply, infrastructure constraints and a lack of procurement options are preventing companies from translating their ambition into action. Addressing these barriers can unlock greater private investment in renewable energy, accelerate the development of clean power systems and enable more companies to deliver on their climate targets.”
