Accelerating India’s transition to green steel in automotive supply chains

AutoCAST (Automotive – Clean Accelerated Steel Supply-Chain Transition) has been launched for stronger collaboration among Indian auto original equipment manufacturers, steel producers, suppliers and policymakers. 

The platform is steered by us in partnership with industry stalwarts Ashok Leyland and Mahindra.

 AutoCAST helps companies build green steel supply chains with confidence, shifting from one‑off commitments or pilots to progress grounded in data and right connects.  

Why is steel decarbonisation important for the auto sector?

Steel is one of the largest sources of indirect (Scope 3) emissions for automotive manufacturers in India. Yet, the use of low-emission or green steel depends on three things: 

⭕ Automakers’ demand for low-emission steel. 
⭕ Confidence and clarity in steel producers to invest in cleaner production. 
⭕ A shared approach to measuring, tracking, and comparing emissions across the supply chain. 

Why join AutoCAST?

AutoCAST is designed to support real, measurable changes within the sector. The platform: 

⭕ Convenes auto Ooriginal Eequipment Mmanufacturers (OEMs) and steel producers in the same room. 
⭕ Strengthens demand for low-emission steel, supporting OEMs on their procurement expectations.  
⭕ Improves emissions data transparency, accuracy and consistency for decision-making. 
⭕ Facilitates collaborative pilot projects to demonstrate green steel adoption. 
⭕ Informs policy through knowledge products and engagement with the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. 
⭕ Shares learnings to inform wider industry practice and policy development.

Objectives

Drive demand for low-emission steel

  • Signal collective OEM demand to suppliers and producers.

  • Embed Common Minimum Ambition (CMA)-aligned criteria in procurement systems.

  • Support OEMs with technical assistance and decarbonisation roadmaps.

Advance emissions accounting and transparency

  • Create interoperable OEM–supplier data frameworks.

  • Build supplier capacity for verified emissions disclosure.

Inform policy and enable ecosystem change

  • Shape national policy frameworks for green steel adoption.

  • Contribute to India’s Green Steel Taxonomy and related standards.

  • Document and disseminate replicable sourcing models for wider adoption.

May 2025

Mahindra signs a charter affirming their intent to decarbonise steel in the automotive value chain.  

June 2025

Ashok Leyland signs a charter affirming their intent to decarbonise steel in the automotive value chain. 

November 2025

The first Industry Dialogue on Decarbonising Auto Steel Supply Chains was facilitated hosted by Ashok Leyland in Chennai, marking the formal launch of AutoCAST. 

AutoCAST was launched by Climate Group by facilitating the first Industry Dialogue on Decarbonising Auto Steel Supply Chains in Chennai. Ashok Leyland kindly hosted the event at Ashok Leyland Management Development Centre.  

Along with Ashok Leyland, participants also included Mahindra, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India.
