Minas Gerais subnational transition plans include headline climate targets aligned with Brazil’s national net-zero by 2050 goal. Through our State Climate Action Plan (PLAC-MG), Minas Gerais has committed to a set of ambitious sectoral targets, to be achieved by 2030 and beyond. Contextualising the national ambitions. Some of our targets and initiatives include: 

  • Reach zero illegal deforestation by 2028 through an integrated, multi-sectoral governance plan already finalized.
  • Ensure 100% of electricity used in public buildings comes from renewable sources by 2050 (target in progress).
  • Reach 900,000 alternative-fuel vehicles in the state fleet by 2030. Implement metropolitan mobility plans in the Belo Horizonte and Vale do Aço regions, focused on energy efficiency and active mobility.
  • Building MRV tools to enhance transparency and accountability across all sectoral targets to ensure alignment with national and international goals.

Minas is advancing innovative approaches to structure and mobilise climate finance at the subnational level — including early-stage work on carbon pricing instruments and the design of a green subnational fund. The Minas Gerais Development Bank (BDMG) is a key partner in this agenda, supporting green credit lines and international cooperation.
