Apr 23 2021, 19:00 UTC - Apr 23 2021, 20:00 UTC

Apr 23 2021, 15:00 EDT - Apr 23 2021, 16:00 EDT

Hosted by the Green Energy Institute

Join Director of the Green Energy Institute Professor Melissa Powers, Sierra Club Staff Attorney Alison Seel, and energy consultant Tarika Powell in a discussion of the risks of fossil gas, the importance of preventing new gas infrastructure, and how addressing gas in the buildings sector is part of achieving a successful clean energy transition.

In a presentation moderated by law student Akriti Bhargava, Professor Melissa Powers, Alison Seel, and Tarika Powell will cover the risks of gas, from an emissions, lock-in, and equity perspective. They will also discuss the importance of preventing the development of new gas infrastructure, particularly as the risk of gas lock-in may exacerbate energy injustices. Finally, they will discuss how addressing gas in the buildings sector is a good tool to help achieve a successful clean energy transition.

Professor Melissa Powers is the Jeffrey Bain Faculty Scholar and Professor of Law at Lewis & Clark Law School. She is also the director of the Green Energy Institute.

Alison Seel is a Sierra Club staff attorney working on building electrification policies and programs in California who is helping to expand the work nationally.

Tarika Powell is an energy consultant, and former Sightline Institute policy researcher and speaker. Tarika is extremely knowledgeable about fossil fuel infrastructure development, public safety, land use management, and equity, and how energy policy affects environmental justice for working communities and communities of color.

Akriti Bhargava is a Lewis & Clark Law School student who is pursuing certificates in Energy and Sustainability Law, and International Law. Before law school, Akriti worked for Sierra Club's Beyond Coal campaign.
